This is invalid since the UNC path must include both the server and share name of the system containing the program.

\\tstephenson\c_drive\pmail\programs\winpm-32.exe -ms -a

Is the "Jadeserver" c: drive shared as "C"?

I generally never install the program more than once, on the server only.

This means that Pegasus Mail is not looking at a mailbox structure that contains more than one user.  In your case is looks like you are not point at the mailboxes on the server.

Correct.  Can you do a directory of the mailbox from the workstation

Dir \\Jadeserver\c\Pmail\Mail

and see all of the use mailboxes?

1. Verify that the path you are using is correct.  The "Server" and "Volume" must match the system and share name assigned to the server.

2. The users must have read/write/create access to their mail directory and at least read access to the Pegasus Mail program directories.

The startup process is pretty simple.  Pegasus Mail reads the pmail.cfg file in the program directory to find both the pmail.usr file and the user mailbox.  It reads the pmail.usr to verify the user and then goes to the matching subdirectory and looks for a pmail.ini file.  If either of these fail for any reason you get the user not found.

Hello all,

I am having issues with trying to set up Pegasus Mail (Version 4.63) to run on my network. My computer configuration is as follows:

Server (MS Small Business Server 2008)

Workstation1 (Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit)

Workstation2 (Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit)

I am wanting to run Pegasus off of the server, to be accessed from either workstation with individual user accounts assigned to each station. Our goal is to be able to see \ reply to all email sent and received from either workstation.

Currently, Pegasus is installed on the server only and I have set up user accounts for both workstations - it appears to be running okay on the server only. Pegasus is not installed on any workstations.

The real issue I am having (so far) is making the 'shortcuts' on the workstations work properly. Upon attempting to open the created Pegasus Mail shortcuts and enter in my username, I get this message:

"The user you are attempting to 'become' (username) does not exist on this system."

Pegasus runs perfectly fine where it is physically located: on the server. But I am unable to access it at all from the workstations, all I receive is that popup window that requests a username which comes back with the "user does not exist".

I have poured hours upon hours of research through the Pegasus forums, and tried every bit of helpful advice written here, examined the configuration files, the pconfig files (had to download DOSBox to make this work) but much of the information is very out dated and/or seemingly inapplicable to the latest build of Pegasus.

Advice? Suggestions? Appreciated!

Workstation 1 shortcut configuration: \\server\pmail\Programs\winpm-32.exe -roam -A

I have run pconfig.exe on the server only.

Configuration - Home directory: C:\pmail\mail\~8
Configuration - New directory: C:\pmail\mail\~8

I have also tried putting in the full \\server\pmail\mail path to no avail.

I have shared the c:\pmail directory as well.

Again, any help would be appreciated.

You need to run pconfig.exe from the Pegasus Mail program directory and change the home and new mail directory spec from c:\pmail\mail\~8 to \\server\volume\pmail\mail\~8 so that the remote system do not look at their local c: drive for the mailboxes but to the server.  This UNC type specification will solve this problem.

Thanks for the response. I have tried fixing the pconfig file as you suggested and it has not worked.

 A few questions:

1) You specified that I should change to \\server\volume\pmail\mail\~8. What exactly is 'volume' and in what context should it be written in? Assuming that it is the drive the program is locate on, I have tried all of the below combinations (granted, some of them are just plain silly, lol):

\\server\c_drive\pmail\mail~8
\\server\c:\pmail\mail\~8
\\server\c\pmail\mail\~8
\\server\volume\mail\~8
\\server\pmail\mail\~8

None of the above have worked.

 2) Is this problem as simple as needing to have Pegasus installed on the workstations as well (remember, it is installed on the server only right now) and configure the pconfig.exe program on the individual workstations to run the different Home and New addresses you specified?

3) Viewing the pmail.ini files under their respective usernames, I noticed that a few fields were blank:

[General]
Personal name =
Home mailbox location =

At the very bottom of the same .ini file I get:

Internal username = name
Working home mailbox location = C:\PMAIL\MAIL\username
New mailbox location = C:\PMAIL\MAIL\username

And finally, the PMAIL.CFG file has the below:

C:\PMAIL\MAIL\~N
C:\PMAIL\MAIL\~N
and a funny looking inverted and backwards 'L' that I can't replicate here.

Ideas?

  1. You have to replace server with the hostname of your server:

    \\<hostname>\c\pmail\mail\~8
    \\<hostname>\c\pmail\mail\~N  (see below)

  2. Yes - call PCONFIG at the local installation at every client.

  3. If you didn't enter a realname in the options yet, the general name is empty.
Home mailbox location may leave empty, otherwise same location (maybe other notation) than Working home mailbox location.

Don't edit PMAIL.CFG! Changes should only be done with PCONFIG! It's no textfile
The plaeholders may be ~8 or ~N. ~8 is for short names with 8 characters only. ~N allows long usernames ... but please with letters and no space in!!! In your case with existing central Mailboxes you should use that placeholder which is defined in the PMAIL.CFG on your server.

Did you actually use the server name?  Here's mine and I use a split system where the server is named "tstephenson" and the local hard drive is shared as "c_drive".  In pconfig.exe I show \\tstephenson\c_drive\pmail\mail\~n for both the HOME and NEW mail directory where the pmail.ini sets the HOME mail directory as shown below.

Home mailbox location: \\tstephenson\c_drive\pmail\mail\thomas
New mailbox location: \\tstephenson\c_drive\PMAIL\MAIL\support

I appreciate the responses.  From the hours of reading I've now done, many people have this same issue. I believe that this is the first time I've read anywhere that Pegasus needs to be installed on each workstation in addition to the server.

Previously, I was simply installing an icon the workstation, which pointed here:

\\jaderserver\pmail\programs\winpm-32.exe -roam -a

When run, this asks for a username, but after entering the username, it says user not found.

I am going to list what I've now done, starting all over again from scratch:

Installed Pegasus on the SERVER on the C:\ drive.

Run DosBox to run PCONFIG on the SERVER. Home and New directories are both entered as:

\\Jadeserver\c\Pmail\Mail\~8

Pegasus runs on the server.  Created new user under Addresses, User Management, New User, "Jeff".

Set SHARE on the c:\ drive on the server. Jeff has full permission.

Created Test mail folder.  Created draft message and saved. Closed Pegasus on the server, restarted. Verified both Test folder and draft message are still there. Purpose being, to tell if Workstation can see Test folder or draft message.

Installed Pegasus on the Workstation.  Run DosBox to run PCONFIG on Workstation. Home and New directories are both entered as:

\\Jadeserver\c\Pmail\Mail\~8

The workstation icon was tried like this:
c:\pmail\programs\winpm-32.exe -roam -a

and like this a bit later:

\\jaderserver\pmail\programs\winpm-32.exe -roam -a

Pegasus does run on the Workstation, using either icon path shown. It loads very slowly, leading me to believe it is trying to go across our network and locate the proper directories. No username popup window is being asked for now.

Pegaus runs on the Workstation, but I'm unable to see any mail folders other then my own default folders. I cannot seen the Test mail folder or the draft message I saved.  This leads me to believe that it is definitely NOT seeing anything on the Server.

I have tried all kinds of combinations on both Server path in PCONFIG and Workstation path in PCONFIG. So far, nothing works. I cannot see Test folder or draft message that was saved on Server.

I need CLEAR instructions on exactly what paths to be used in PCONFIG on Server AND on Workstation. What shares need to be set.
