Folder heirarcy is gone

Olaf --

I found copies of hierarch.pm & state.pmj from about 5 weeks ago that had the filing tray entries & replaced the current files with those. The filing trays are now back. There were a few folders that I had created in the interim that I had to move into the appropriate filing trays. But that was not nearly the effort that recreating all the fiing trays would have been.s

Thanks for your patience and help.

The filingtray/folder heirarchy has suddenly disappeared and all folders are not alphabetized and there are no filing trays. I remember advice it got here to rename HEIRARCHY.pmj & replace it with a backup copy. That worked before; but, not now.

I would appreciate some advice on how to recover from this situation.

Allowing the creation of a new copy of hierarch.pm will result in the loss of filing trays.

The backup copy might not have included the tray structure or a new copy has been created.

You will need to rebuild them manually.

Hmm ... backuped HIERARCH.PM doesn't help ... I have had a problem some times not knowing the reason - but how to fix

Open HIERARCH.PM with a texteditor. Most times the first line looks similar to this:

2,1,"203A1978:My mailbox","","My mailbox"

Search the file for another entry with "My mailbox" or "2,1". If you find one remember the hex-ID of the mailbox ("203A1978" here). The ID is used to chain folders or trays at first level (and trays get their own ID to chain ...). For unknown reasons (I asume in the rare cases it's after heavy crashes) Pegasus may create a new mailboxentry in HIEARCH.PM ... without deleting the old one and the ID-chain. We may repair that:

  • close Pegasus
  • make backup of HIERARCH.PM and STATE.PMJ
  • edit both files
  • in HIERARCH.PM identify the entry with trays in chain and copy the identification (like "203A1978:My mailbox")
  • in STATE.PMJ at top there is a section which may/should include something like:
         [Mailbox_IDs]
         DEFAULT=0,0,0,0,"7C977083:My mailbox"
  • paste the identification from HIERARCH.PM over the wrong entry in STATE.PMJ
  • delete the wrong mailboxentry and all subsequent entries for folders in CHAIN in HIERARCH.PM
  • save the files and restart Pegasus

BTW: If there are many entries/lines in HIERARCH.PM with "Name_Unavailable" at the end ... delete all these lines. The bigger HIERARCH.PM the bigger the chance to have it destroy it in case of crashing hradware, Windows or Pegasus.

bye   Olaf

Olaf--

I think you're saying that the hex:ID of the mailbox should be the same for all folders in HEIARCH.PM & in the first line of  STATE.PMJ.

They are already the same. But the folder structure has not been corrected.

Yes ... but Pegasus allready created a new HIERARCH.PM based on found folders ... without trays, because trays are only virtual entries in that file. And possibly STATE.PMJ has been changed too. Old HIERARCH.PM has been distructed ... for what reason ever.

So you should take your copy or backup of old HIERARCH.PM and have a look inside there. That was what I was writing about ... and forgot you have a new HIERARCH.PM
