Server name or address could not be resolved (12007) when downloading pics

There has been much traffic and discussion on the DNSChanger Trojan (since last Oct?) could this be a factor? All heck will be breaking 2012-mar-08. Do a search for DNSChanger.

 from a commandline type:

ipconfig /all<ret>

Near the end there should be one or two entries for DNS.

Here are some known hostile IP address pairs used by the DNS Changer malware:

64.28.176.1 -  64.28.191.254

67.210.0.1 -  67.210.15.254

77.67.83.1 - 77.67.83.254

85.255.112.1 -  85.255.127.254

93.188.160.1 -  93.188.167.254

213.109.64.1 -  213.109.79.254

Try using OpenDNS as your DNS host/source. Information can be found here:

http://www.opendns.com/

it is a free service.

Hi all

I've just upgraded to Windows 7 and Peg 4.63 (Win32). When I try to obtain pictures in an email by right-click and "Show pictures (HTML only)", each pic has the msg

The server name or address could not be resolved (12007)

instead of the pic. Obviously I've failed to enter some info or setting somewhere. Sorry -- have looked at these forums, and Googled, and looked at the Help section. What should I do?

Thanks

Ben

An error is an error is an error, what else should I say? Try opening the message in your browser (via the respective context menu entry) to see whether it can display these images or not. If it can it might be worth to further investigate this issue, otherwise it's just an error that cannot be resolved ...

I am getting this all of the sudden as well with emails that previously would show the images.

Could you please be a little more helpful and do the test I suggested in my previous reply?

Yes..all of these messages when I open in my browser do load as they are supposed to.  Even some that are older that have worked in the past when viewing in Pegasus, now give the error.  I have no found one that does not give the error.

Can you forward one of these (as an attachment to a message, not bounced and not inserted) to <beta-reports [at] pmail.gen.nz>, please?

For everyone's information: According to Beth an ipconfig /flushdns cleared the issue.

Thanks so much, an ipconfig /flushdns did it for me too. Any need to do an ipconfig /registerdns also?

I don't think, but I'm not really familiar with these things ...

Hi Michael and anyone else...

Just to report that for the last week or so, this problem has come back. The ipconfig /flushdns command does not resolve it. Emails that do not download pics/graphics do display correctly in a web browser if I go to the address given in plain text in the email that reads "Having trouble viewing this email? Please see the web version".

Any further pointers? I'm running Windows 7 and Pegasus 4.63 (Win 32), Dec 22 2011, build 325.

Thanks

Ben

You tell us: Without being able to duplicate we can't solve it ... Try forwarding one of these mails (attached to a message or as CNM file from your new mail directory) to <beta-reports [at] pmail.gen.nz>, but I'm almost sure it'll work properly on my machine. Does it matter which renderer you use (IERenderer or BearHtml)? Do you or does your provider use a proxy? Maybe clearing IE's cache would help?

Hi Michael

The problem has resolved itself through the well-known (to software guys) mechanism: if someone technical gets involved and tried to solve it or ask further questions, the problem goes away!!!

Seriously though, I don't know why it's now OK again. I shall keep you (i.e. the forum) posted if it occurs again, and use what you've said in your last email as my starting point.

Thanks anyway,

Ben
