LAN Access to Mail Files

Am familiar with DOSBox and will download a copy so that I can run pconfig.exe

The balance of your tutorial is thorough and I must now get my feet wet to fully understand and appreciate.  We now use a common username  which certainly is appropriate for children, grandchildren and now one great grandchild (but at one he does not type yet) and many friends but we also have our independent interests where I will consider setting up separate aliases with our ISP.  Without separate accounts we would not see any value

Thomas, you have been more than helpful and I do appreciate the time spent with me (and obvious that you do this for many).

Does Pegasus permit using a common mail file location for copies running on different computers on a LAN.  I specifically run two computers with copies of Thunderbird installed on each, but with a single database on one.  Only one copy is permitted to run at a time with a notice displayed on the second if an attempt is made to start.  I would love to be able to have email software running at the same time on both but with access to the common database.  That would require some sort of record locking.

Yes, as you can see from my Help | About Pegasus Mail | Info below I run Pegasus Mail with my Pegasus Mail program and mail folders on a different system.

WINPMAIL.EXE directory: \\tstephenson\c_drive\pmail
Home mailbox location: \\tstephenson\c_drive\pmail\mail\thomas
New mailbox location: \\tstephenson\c_drive\PMAIL\MAIL\support

However you can only one copy of the program looking at these same folders at the same time.  That said if you are using IMAP4 to access the mailboxes then you can have multiple systems looking at the same mail folders at the same time.  I do this with Mercury using the IMAP4 server when accessing my mail.

I believe I understand that to access my POP mail from each of my two computers on my LAN, I simply identify under Tools | Options | Mailbox Location the same path to that mail - one of course will be on a mapped drive.  The limitation however sounds similar and I hope not identical to Thunderbird - as you state "However you can only one copy of the program looking at these same folders at the same time."  Thunderbird will not start the second copy warning you that it is in use on another computer.  Does Pegasus warn or permit looking as some of the subfolders?

No, the actual mailbox must be set using pconfig running from the Pegasus Mail program directory, the above only changes the HOME mail directory location and not the new mail directory.  Here's what this looks like.

Pegasus Mail also provides a warning that the mailbox is already in use but you can ignore this and Pegasus Mail will operate as normal EXCEPT that if both copies are being used at the same time it isvery possible that you will get folder corruption and loss of mail.

To change location where the second computer looks for Pegasus mail files I use pconfig and make the three entries adjusted for my locations.  I found my copy not compatible with the version installed noting the need for specifics about whether operating under 32 or 64 bit.  Assume I may have downloaded the wrong version (I am running Windows 7 Home which is 64 bit) and will check the site for the correct version.

Your last statement, "copies are being used at the same time is very possible that you will get folder corruption and loss of mail" suggests I am not better off, at least with regard to my using two copies concurrently.  I had hoped to be able to write and send an email to somebody in my in-basket while my wife was writing to another from her in-basket.  Not possible?

The program pconfig.exe is 16 bit and there is currently no 32 bit version.  To run 16-bit MSDOS programs on your 64-bit Windows systems (and Linux) get a copy of DOSBox. This is quite handy to have around when you have old MSDOS utilities to run.

Sure as long as your wife is running as a separate user.  The problem only arises when you are running as the same user from two different locations.  You would have a setup something like

share:\pmail
share:\pmail\programs the common PMail program
share:\pmail\mail the pmail.usr file
share:\pmail\mail\you your home and new mail directory
share:\pmail\mail\wife wife's home and new mail directory

The share: in this case would be specified using the UNC format so that the program using the correct drive, i.e. \\tstephenson\c_drive\pmail\mail\~8 says to go to the system tstephenson and use the share c_drive to find both the program and the mailboxes.  The remote systems only have a Pegasus Mail shortcut pointing to \\tstephenson\c_drive\pmail\programs\winpm-32.exe -ms -I <username>
