Hello,

I am wondering if someone can help me.

My employer has this week switched all email at our

university to Microsoft Exchange, and “MAPI & SMTP will be the only mail

protocols supported”, and as a result they “will not be enabling the IMAP

protocol on Exchange as it introduces complexity and stability issues”.

This means that I can’t use my beloved, perfect, Pegasus

anymore.

I really do NOT want to use Outlook Web App. It’s horrible and clunky and doesn’t do what

I want it to!

Is there a way around this?

My IST tech says no, but I don’t want to accept that answer.

If there is something I can do, could someone please tell me

in simple English, not tech-speak?

Is the new version of Pegasus (6.0) going to address this

issue?

My university did this to me a year or so ago. They said they wouldn't support IMAP, but they didn't actually switch IMAP support off. I had trouble getting PMail to work with Exchange. Tried Davmail as gateway, but it wasn't much of an improvement. There were lots of crashes when I did connect. Anyway, somehow after a couple of weeks it settled down (without Davmail), and now I and one other colleague use PMail 4.63 as our mail client both at the university and off-campus, via IMAP, and broadly speaking it works fine. See if you can persuade them to leave IMAP on. Am happy to share the settings I use if that would help.

Two things you need to do:

1. Find out what email address format Internet users will employ to mail to MsExchange SMTP service. It will likely be something like:

yourfirstname.Lastname@companyDomain. MsExchange will substitute the internal user address for that address.

2. Ask the Admin folk (nicely) to update the MsExchange address book to point your name at your SMTP server (that you use POP3 to fetch mail from).

It will help your cause greatly if your company has an SMTP/POP3 service.

I realise my message was very unclear. My university isn't willing to devote any official support time to IMAP on their MS Exchange, so the limited advice I got from the techies was purely a favour to me personally. But they didn't actually switch IMAP support off on the server. [Two senses of 'support'.] As for outgoing mail, that goes via a different, SMTP server, as far as I know unchanged except that PMail now logs into it directly.

If all else fails, I have a utility called PM2MSM32 which downloads MsExchange mail to Pegasus Mail. It is only one way so of limited use, but it does download the messages with their attachments. Maybe try it out: http://www3.telus.net/public/irelam/pm2msm.zip I am unable to update it as I don't have a MsExchange server access any more, since my retirement.

Traffic from Pegasus Mail to MsExchange could be achieved by just having your Pegasus Mail maintaining a set of contacts at work in its address books, or simply keying in the full SMTP address of work contacts

When I was using Pegasus Mail with MS Exchange via IMAP4 I needed to connect to the server that had my Exchange account rather than simply using the general server. I did this by using the server/username format when entering the IMAP4 username. Other than that it was pretty straight forward. FWIW, the corporate IS group did not care what mail client I used but they only supported Lookout!. Most of the people were 100% Microsoft just like they were 100% IBM a couple of decades before. ;-(
