Trouble setting up Mercury with SSL support

I went through this issue of using Thunderbird with Mercury, with SSL, several months ago.  In the end, I got it to work satisfactorily.  Within my LAN, I didn't use SSL, but used it for external connections.  This is discussed in the threads http://community.pmail.com/forums/thread/29468.aspx and http://community.pmail.com/forums/thread/29655.aspx.  Maybe some parts of these threads may help.

In the end, I decided not to use SSL for external connections.  Instead, I now use OpenVPN.  External connections are effectively part of my LAN and I don't need to use any other connection secuirty.  It saved having to make another hole in my firewall, as that for OpenVPN was already there.  As I am the sole external user, there is no significant management problem.

I've finally decided I want to have my Mercury imap server support SSL. I enter the IMAP4 server configuration dialog and select the SSL tab. There I 1) check Enable support for SSl/TLS, 2) set the port to 993, and 3) Create a certificate. Next I open port 993 in my router. I then configure my mail client (Thunderbird) for port 993, set connection security to SSL/TLS and Authentication method to normal password. When I now try to connect to my mail server, the connection is refused. What am I doing wrong here? It works just fine with no security. Thanks, in advance, for the help.

What does the session log say?  That should show what is going on.

I use the same settings and it works so I suspect that Thunderbird is not getting to the Mercury host.  Can you see Thunderbird trying to make the connection to MercuryI?  I would turn on session logging and check.
