probs sending, socket read error 2745

Hi, wbrook,

I'm having what seems to be an identical problem.  I'm running the latest Pegasus (having been an enthusiastic user and advocate for about 10 years!).  I copied my Admin folder from a desktop running XP and Pegasus 4.63, and substituted it for the same folder on a new Toshiba laptop running Windows 7 Home and the samenewly-installed version of pmail.  I receive mail via a Verizon server and have no download problems at all.  But at this point, no messages go out.  They remain queued despite several attempts to reestablish connections to outgoing mail server.  Nothing.  Nada.  The error message is similar to yours

[*] Connection established to 206.46.232.12
>> 0089 421 Cannot connect to SMTP server 206.46.232.12 (206.46.232.12:25), connect error 10060
<< 0022 EHLO [192.168.1.102]
7: Socket read error 2745.

I'd appreciate knowing what you did to cure your problem, do a workaround, or other fix.  Or, if you weren't able to fix the beast, what email client have you adopted instead of Pegasus???  I really like this application, and have LOTS of distribution lists, folders and more in this application and enjoy its power and flexibility.  I'd like to stay with it.  But, and it's a large "but," I have to be able to send mail easily and quickly without logging into my ISP just to send a message!!!

Thanks and hope to hear from you or others...    David

Hi all,

I'm using PMail 4.63 on Win7.

I recently had to change smtp servers. I was using the one associated with my hosting service but it was causing me problems with certain domains that I write to frequently.

I therefore changed to the smtp for my internet provider. That solved the one problem I was having but now I have problems sending from pmail.

Every time I try to send a message, I get message Socket read error 2745. The message then goes into the queue. Then I try sending from there, and after somewhere between 2 and 50 times of retrying, the message does finally go. So I can actually send mail but it is an extremely time consuming task! If I switch back the the previous smtp, no problems whatsoever to send.

I read somewhere about a similar problem with comcast, in which it was suggested to disable checksum offload, which I did but it didn't change anything.

I also read to try setting the domain for helo/ehlo to 0.0.0.0, no change.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know what other information I can provide. Below the error message:

[*] Connection established to 85.XX.XX.XXX

Hi,

can anyone help with this?

Sending email has become a real chore!

Before it starts getting technical, are you using a small timeout value? Check in your POP3 profile, via menu Tools/Internet Options. Your timeout value should be at least 300 seconds. This will allow download of a message with a large attachment to complete.

Then go further into the current POP3 profile and select your current POP3 definition, then click Edit.  The timeOut value should be the same 300 seconds.

Click OK to save any changes you have made. HTH

As a further quick test, click the menu File/Selective mail download, which will show you the subject content and file sizes of all your mail in their server.

That will give you an idea of whether there is a very large message that is timing out. You can then mark that message for deletion and mark all the others for retrieval. Then click the button called "Make it so"

Thanks for your help. However, I have no problems whatsoever in receiving email. No probs with pop3.

My problem is in sending email, in particular with one particular SMTP server. See message above.

And I have tried changing the timeout for the smtp server. Doesn't change anything. The error message comes up immediately, regardless of the timeout setting.

Thanks!

If the error come up immediately then it looks like you have not setup the SMTP host properly.

1.    Does it require port 25, 587 or something else?

2.    Does is require a SSL/STARTTLS secure connection?

3.    What happens when you manually telnet into port 25 of this host? Port 587?

Thanks for your reply.

I don't doubt that there is something wrong in the setup, but I would like to point out that I can eventually send email. I just have to try over and over. The message never goes the first time,  I get the error message and it ends up in the queue. From the queue I try sending it, sometimes it goes after a couple of tries, other times it takes up to 50 tries. But it does always eventually go.

Also, I've had the profile for this SMTP for some time, but have had it disabled because I wasn't using it. It had worked in the past. One thing that has changed in the meantime is that I moved from XP to Win7.

In answer to your questions:

1. The SMTP does require port 25, and that is what I have it set to.

2. I don't know about SSL/STARTTLS, but don't see anything about it on the provider's web site. I don't think I've ever enabled this for any smtp server I use.

3. I tried telneting to port 25.

Sometimes I get:

220 name.of.host ESMTP Service ready

Other times I get:

421 Connection to host lost. Press any key to continue

Thanks for any addition help you can give me on this.

This simply means that sometimes the host available and other times it is not.  This can happen with a very busy server but I really suspect that there are a number of SMTP hosts providing the service in rotation and some are broken.

Could you provide the actual host name?  It's really not a security issue to provide the name and without it we are just guessing.  It does look like it could be a Mercury server though from the greeting string.

I get no answer from this server at all on port 25, what are you using in the SMTP setup for the host name?  If I had that one at least I could analyze the settings in the DNS.

There multiple servers supporting this host name since I get a different greeting string and these other server do a secure connection using STARTTLS.  This is a really strange setup.  If you are not using STARTTLS on the ones that require it this will cause problems.

thanks, I tried turning on starttls and that seemed to help a bit, in that messages still fail to send but it only took a few times to get it to go through.

got one message back saying aa013-1msr.fastwebnet.it  is on a RBL.

also get messages from the anti-virus (avast) that it doesn't support starttls so is not scanning my outbound mail.

I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do...

Thanks so much for your help.

Sure enough it is on three.  They are saying SPAM is coming from this server.

Don't scan the outbound mail.  There are a number of reasons for this and the primary reason is if it catches you sending a virus your system is already infected and Avast! Should have caught this way before it gets in a outbound message.  FWIW, Avast! Scanning the outbound mail may be causing your SMTP problem.

>  I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do...

Get on the hook with the people running the servers and ask them to fix their problem.  Use a different SMTP host.

I turned off outbound scanning. Didn't fix the problem.

As far as I know, I only have two choices for smtp server: the one associated with my email (and hosting) and the one associated with my internet provider. Both create (different) problems for me.

Thanks for your help.

There is a third that immediately comes to mind.  Get a Yahoo Plus account and then send via the Yahoo SMTP host.
