Hello all,

I have used Pegasus mail for many years now, upgrading from dos versions to the first windows version and now to the latest 4.63 running on Windows 7 (32 bit). It's always been stable, but since installing v. 4.63 (keeping all the original settings) it occasionally (about once or twice a week) fails to download new messages from the server. Not when I start Pegasus Mail, not when I open the new mail folder, not when I click on the "Check your POP3 host for new mail" button. Normally, when downloading new mail, the status bar at left bottom corner changes from: "Press <f1> for help" to "Connecting to pop3.paradise.net.nz" to "Getting message list" and back again to "Press <f1> for help". At the times when downloading fails, the "Press <f1> for help" message in the status bar flashes once and is then back up again immediately. Restarting Pegasus Mail doesn't help, logging off and back on into Windows doesn't help, even rebooting the computer (laptop) doesn't help (immediately). Switching the computer off for 24 hrs seems to be the only remedy. My wife still runs an earlier version of Pegasus mail (on a different laptop, but also under Windows 7), through the same wireless router to the same mail server, but doesn't experience the problem. Has anyone experienced the same problem and figured out how to fix it? </f1></f1></f1>

It sounds like a failure to connect to the POP3 host.  Enable internet session logging and see if the log provides a clues.  Read the help file topic on internet session logging.

To enable internet session logging tick the "Create Internet session logs (advanced diagnostic use only) " located in the General tab of Tools|Internet Options.

Hello Brian,

Thank you for your reply. Below is a copy of the internet session log created when the problem occurred again. It says PM is unable to connect to POP server 231.33.97.203. But why? I never had the problem with previous versions of PM and my wife doesn't have the problem from her laptop, accessing (presumably) the same POP server, using the previous version of PM. And what do "connect error 10049\0D\0A" and "Socket read error 2745" mean?

I've got a problem with the IP address being used here, I get

pop3.paradise.net.nz, A, 203.97.33.231

as the IP address.  Looks to me like there is something wrong with you DNS setup.  Try using the IP address instead of the host name to see what happens..

As to the error messages, the basic error is that the host at 231.33.97.203 is not a POP3 server and the other error messages just mean that the server closed the connection.

It's strange that PM would randomly try to connect to 231.33.97.203 instead of 203.97.33.231. While connected to the first it fails to download mail from the server, and on an other day, when connecting to the second, it downloads mail OK. I'll have to wait until the error occurs again before I try using the IP address instead of the host name so I know it solves the problem. My initial question still remains: Why does this suddenly happen since installing the latest version of PM, while it has never been a problem in the past and while it isn't a problem on my wife's computer using the same host name?

It appears coincidental.  Just to be safe you might want to disable your current POP3 host entry and create a new one.  You could create two new ones, one with the host name and one with the IP address.  You could then test by enabling one and disabling the other in turn to see what happens.

Pegasus Mail uses the windows DNS system to resolve the host name to an IP address and it looks like yours is flaky.  The why is unknown, Pegasus Mail has little or nothing to do with this, it's the way the system works.
