There was indeed reatime virus scanning going on on this server. Perhaps that's the culprit. At least now I know where the file lives and can make periodic copies for safekeeping.

All of the users have disappeared from the "manage local users" list in Mercury and MercuryS reports "user <xxx@yyy.zzz> not known" when trying to deliver mail to local users. The user's mail folders still exist in the directory designated as the "local mailbox directory path:" I can open those folders and see the contents but they've stopped receiving new mail.

Any thoughts on how Mercury has "lost sight" of these user mailboxes and also how to regenerate the local users list in the "manage local users" module?

Problem solved,

I found the thread below which discussed the disappearing pmail.usr file problem. That was the case with me. The file was empty. I found an old copy and put it in place and the users now show up and receive mail.

Now the question is why was the file deleted?  Most probable cause is a conflict between Mercury and some other program when it does it's open exclusive on a file.  Do you have any anti-virus software touching files on opening in the Mercury directories?  If so this will guarantee some file loss  

I was wondering what was going on with this.  Thanks so much for the information and clarification.  It makes me feel better now that I understand what's happening here.
