Spell checker treating single quote as word character

Ah yes, I've just tried out TinySpell again, and out it goes. It doesn't underline all the misspelled words in the message, as MS Word, The Bat! and Eudora 7 do. Pity, because otherwise it's a really nice and neat program.

This is weird - surely other people must have come up against this, but my search on this forum doesn't find any mention of it.

I have just got set up with a freshly downloaded copy of PM 4.63 nicely configured on my system, but I find that the spell checker is a pain up the butt. Quite apart from it not underlining unrecognised words, which I want (has anyone a suggestion of an alternative spell checker I could use with PM that does that?), this spell checker treats the single quote character as though it were a word character, so either I have to load my user dictionary with words with a single quote attached at the beginning or end - something I really don't want, or I have to be very careful to click the Skip button for each such spurious word - something I also really don't want to have to do.

I'm using the  English (UK) dictionary, which, incidentally, has an awful lot of everyday words missing from it, so, that matter in itself is a pain because I have to keep adding words with undue frequency.

So, please, is there a way to stop this unhelpful PM response to single quotes happening, or is this simply a bug that everyone is more or less happily living with and therefore not reporting the problem here? -- Many thanks.

I suggest you give TinySpell a try. It will not give false single quoted words, and secondly it will highlight wrongly spelled words as they are typed in. The program is available on this site, with multiple dictionaries. http://community.pmail.com/files/folders/languages/entry10146.aspx

Please note that the upcoming new version of Pegasus Mail will have a replacement spell checker that is more comprehensive in options and languages supported.

There is also a large US dictionary available for Pegasus.  I don't see it available for download on the community site but it's available here:  http://www.vandenbogaerde.net/pegasusmail/pf_myown.htm

I don't know how much of a difference there is between UK & US

spellings but the large US dictionary is much more comprehensive than

the one packaged with the Pegasus download.  If a US dictionary would work for you the large one is the one to use.

It won't solve the single quote problem but will help alleviate having to add words.

Thank you, Martin and Brian, for your replies. Actually it's good to know that the new Pegasus version will have a better spell-checker - though of course I don't yet know whether it would behave as I want.  Actually the lack of red underlining of misspelled words is a real downer in itself as things are. Do we have any word as to how the spell-checker in the new PM version will operate?  In the meantime I'll look at TinySpell again, but some time ago I did try it out and dismissed it for some reason or other.
