problem with IP domain

First of all, you seem to have lost the square brackets around the IP address in the local domain definition, it should be [192.168.1.185].

As for replying to received mail, please check Mercury logs to find out what happened. If it was an external recipient it has nothing to do with local domains, anyway.

Hello Members...

I'm back with a new problem that will identify me once again as a newby.

In my setup of Mercury/32 v4.74, I specified the domain as an IP address "[192.168.1.16]" .  Later I discovered that I had to set up an authentication file in the MercuryS / connections.  I have checked "do not permit SMTP relaying of non-local mail" and "Authenticated SMTP connections may relay mail".  In my AUTH Password file I have 2 lilnes...

Anthony blackice
Admin blackice

My first test was to send an email from the Mercury/32 application via file / send mail message.

This worked fine.  The messages arrived from postmaster@[192.168.1.16] arriving at admin@[192.168.1.16] and anthony@[192.168.1.16]

The problem is that I cannot send email to either "anthony"  to "admin" or from "admin" to "anthony" using the format "anthony@[192.168.1.16]" or "admin@[192.168.1.16]".

I can send the mail with no apparent problems...but it never arrives to the intended recipient.

I'm getting "553 We do not relay without RFC2554 authentication"

This is I am sure, something very simple I missed.  Any help greatly appreciated.

Thnanks

So the recipient isn't considered local, apparently. Check what the MercuryS log says about it, and consider temporarily switching on session logging in MercuryS to get full details.

Mercury help suggests that the Domains section should look something like this:

calliope calliope

calliope calliope.pmail.gen.nz

calliope [192.156.225.76]

Use the real hostname, not [192. If you plan to use MercuryE for external deliveries you should change myname to a domain name or a public IP as well. Otherwise use MercuryC to relay through your Internet provider's SMTP server.

Our only use of Mercury is to have inter-company email only and to use Outlook to share calendar appointments and contacts.

Are there specific config tweaks I should make or should I re-install Mercury and specify different parameters?

My basic question/problem seems to be that I cannot send email to anthony@[192.168.1.16]

If I send the email from the Mercury application, its received but if I send it from another user...it does not arrive.

Is the format of the address incorrect or am I missing a setting.....

I used this program 20 years ago and I know it's only gotten better over the years...I am confident that once I get it going, it will do exactly what we need.

Thanks for your help.

I'm sure the parameters had to be put in correctly 20 years ago ;)

Have you made the changes Rolf pointed out?

I opened configuration>core module and entered the name bnilocal.com in the "internet name for this system" instead of [192.168.1.16].

On each computer I also added the line to the hosts file... 192.168.1.16     bnilocal.com

Now when I try to send a message from the postmaster, I get the message ....."non-existent host or domain  resolving 'bnilocal.com'"

What did I miss  (again...[:|]

Thanks...

It's working now....

This is something that I do not understand but here is what I did......

I edited the mercury.ini file and placed the following line under the [domain] section...

bnilocal     :   bnilocal.com

There were 2 other lines in this section....

[192     :     [192
[192     :     [192.168.1.16]

I am not sure exactly how these lines were created or why my latest change to the domain name was not present...perhaps they are subsets of the entries I made when installing Mercury mail transport.

I am guessing that I can delete these lines but I will await a reply before doing so.

Thank everyone for your help.  I pointed me in the right direction.

 There is order once again...[H]

Assuming that you will only use the server locally the domains should probably be (assuming that the server hostname is bnilocal and the server IP address is 192.168.1.16):

bnilocal  :  bnilocal

bnilocal  :  bnilocal.com

bnilocal  :  [192.168.1.16]

Well...as Arnold would say...I'm back!

Everything is working fine....except I do not seem to have the reply-to set up correctly.

In outlook express and OL10 I have an email account set up as follows...

email address edmond@mydomain.com

reply address  edmond@mydomain.com

In the mercury.ini file I have the domain section set up as...

[domains]

mydomain     :     mydomain

mydomain     :     mydomain.com

mydomain     :     192.168.1.185

We are able to send and receive email just fine...when we try to reply to an email we received....the reciepient never gets it.

Is there another setting in the user setup or other configuration I need to address?

Thanks again for everyone's help.
