Newbie Problems with Mercury32 Configuration

The help was my first port of call but it didn't work on my machine.

However your answer inspired me to look further and if it helps anyone else, just click on the link that comes up when you try and access Help. It will take you to a page where you can download and install the help files.

I will have another go and hopefully next time my questions won't be quite so green :-)

Many thanks for all the pointers so far, they helped a lot!

My environment is as follows:

- My website is paradox.com (not the real name, just for this example)

- My site is hosted with Bluehost where I get my email via Pop3 (mail.paradox.com)

- I have cable internet but don't know if it is a fixed IP address

- I have a server called paradoxserver which is running Microsoft Server 2008

- There are 5 computers linked to this server. They will be using Outlook to access their email.

I want to install Mercury32 on paradoxserver and have an environment where all paradox.com emails come from Bluehost to Mercury32 on paradoxserver and are then pulled into the 4 computers according to user.

I've got the manual open in front of me but am really struggling with the basic configuration and the terminology being used. I don't understand what I should put in "local domain" or where I get the IP address from or even what the "internet name of this system" is.

Can anyone help get me started by telling me where I should be looking for this information.

If you own the domain, put it in as local domain (paradoxserver paradox.com) and internet name (paradox.com).  Configure mailboxes for each user, and then MercuryD to get the mail from Bluehost.  The set up MercuryC to relay outgoing mail through Bluehost.

Paul, thank you for that - it's done the trick.

My next problem is having Outlook on the client machines pick up the email from the server.

In Outlook, I've changed the incoming and outgoing server settings to "paradoxserver"

I've changed the user logon information to match the user mailbox I created on Mercury.

But Outlook is not connecting.

I had a look at many threads on this site and from the information on those, I tried to telnet to paradoxserver 25 and 110. It connects on 25 but not on 110.

Not really sure what to do now - do you have any advice?

An update on my issue...

In Outlook on the client machine, the "send test message" on the account configuration screen indicates that it can't connect to my POP server but that it is sending messages okay.

I have got paradoxserver as the email server on both pop and smtp fields. I also unchecked the "do not send as relay" in MercuryS.

So my current issue appears to be how to connect to POP on paradoxserver.

Looking at the Mercury GUI on paradoxserver I can see that messages are being sent and received. So it looks like there are some messages sitting waiting for Outlook to pick up in my Mercury inbox (assuming a user inbox was set up automatically in Mercury when I created a new user).

Is MercuryP (the POP3 server module) active? If so, is there anything in the log file for that module?

Ah thank you - no it wasn't active.

Now I've got it half working but it's more by accident as the logs indicate that my configuration is wonky.

The main error I am getting is user "FirstName.LastName@paradox.com" does not exist.

POP3 - I can receive emails into my account in Outlook from other people (gmail, hotmail etc) but not if I send myself a test message from within Mercury.

SMTP - I cannot send emails. They leave Outlook with no error message and look as if they have gone successfully. But they never arrive at the destination. The logs say user  "FirstName.LastName@paradox.com" does not exist.

I've played around with various configurations but to no avail.

In Manage Users, I have set:

Username = FirstName

Personal name = FirstName.LastName@paradox.com

With incoming emails, I found a setting in MercuryD that allows me to link POP3 to a User. I cannot find anything similar in MercuryS or MercuryC that allows me to link SMTP to a user.

Also, is it wierd that I get the "user unknown" message in my POP3 logs even when a message is successfully received in Outlook?

What am I missing?

Have you set up all the user's accounts?  Ensure you have the correct setting in Configuration / Core / Advanced - Address auto-recognition.  (Otherwise you will have to set them up as aliases to different mailboxes.)

That's the internal name (also used as a directory).
Personal name = FirstName.LastName@paradox.com
Where did that come from?  It should be "Firstname Lastname" or similar.  What's unclear about the help?

"Personal name  the "familiar name" by which the user is known to the rest of the world."

Reading the help would get you past many of these problems.
