OK. From what I've been reading, and from your answer, port 587 is "more likely" to work, just because some ISPs might block port 25. For now, I'll keep port 25, since it is working correctly in my case.

This thread is certainly useful for situations like mine (Pegasus and hotmail). I hope this thread is useful for other users too.

I can't figure out how to connect to my hotmail account using Pegasus.

When searching for the correct values, I keep finding the same exact values to set up, but I always receive:

Description of error: "A network error occurred during connection to the host"

and: "No trace information available"

when I try to connect to the account.

Is there any chance someone could post (or point me to) a step-by-step, specific for Pegasus and hotmail?

What I mean is, not just to post the general values, because I already saw them. What I need is to find where exactly I'm going wrong in Pegasus' settings.

Examples:

What should I set in "Download controls"?

SMTP security -> smtp authentication?

Where to set in Pegasus "Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)"?

Is there any chance I am having some firewall problem (I don't see such issue, but I don't really know what to think)?

I keep "playing around" with possible variations in Pegasus' settings, but with no success.

I'm not sure if you would need any specific info of my system. Please don't hesitate to ask.

I can confirm that the key was indeed the last screen, smtp security and authentication. Before your post, all the info I kept finding and reading stated that I should be using direct SSL for both pop3 and smtp for hotmail, but only when I changed to STARTTLS for smtp (as in those screen-shots) I was able to connect. Other settings are also important, but that one in particular was the one causing my problem, and I haven't seen STARTTLS mentioned in other threads about hotmail (or maybe I missed it).

I am not using exactly the same settings as in each one of your screen-shots, but the settings I changed are not related to the connection itself, so that's fine.

FWIW, I'd also like to report that there is one little typo in those images. In one screen-shot, it says "smto" instead of the correct one, "smtp".

Lastly, I am using port 25 for smtp, which is different from the one shown in those snapshots, port 587. Although smtp seems to be working correctly with port 25, should I change it to 587? Is there any advantage, like for example compatibility, security or less interference with other programs?

I am also curious about what I have read (also here in this forum) about “Secure Password Authentication (SPA)” in relation to hotmail settings. What would be the equivalent terminology in Pegasus' settings?

There are three traditional SMTP ports.
SMTP (25), Submission (587), and SMTPS (465).
Not all servers allow Submission (587) and SMTPS (465) connections.
Some ISPs block outbound connections to SMTP (25) servers
which are outside of their WAN (not their servers).
For this reason some SMTP servers allow connections on
those alternate ports.
SMTP and Submission can be in-the-clear or via SSL/TLS (STARTTLS).
The STARTTLS exchange starts in-the-clear. When the server informs
the client it can do STARTTLS, the client sends the command to start TLS,
from that point the exhange is encrypted.
SMTPS is always via SSL/TLS.

SPA is a proprietary protocol, there is no equivalent in Pegasus.

Thank you for the explanation. It helped me to be aware, so I looked for some additional info about those concepts.

Now, assuming I can access (ie. send emails using) my hotmail email account by means of Pegasus with either, port 25 or port 587, is there any advantage in using one port or the other in this particular situation (Pegasus + hotmail)? Some compatibility issue or standard that would be recommended (so to be inclined to use one port or the other)? Any specific setting that is more convenient when using one port but that would / should be different if I'd use the other?

There should be no difference, the only advantage to the alternate port would be in the instance of port 25 blocking by a Internet Service Provider.
Scenario: A user's ISP does not implement port 25 blocking, so they configure Pegasus to use smtp.live.com:25. They happily send to Hotmail using their laptop while at home. While visiting family they are unable to send to Hotmail as the family's ISP does block port 25. However if Pegasus was configured to use smtp.live.com:587 the user would most likely not experience that condition.
