Encryption crash message on close

I discovered, while using my crash-on-close Pegasus, that Pegasus was crashing when I selected the deleted mail folder.  While I couldn't delete the folder by selecting it first, I found that re-indexing with right-click, while not resulting in a successful re-index, did leave that folder highlighted as selected.  I was then able to delete it and re-create it with a message deletion.  There seem at the moment to be no further crashes on exit.

I have moved Pegasus to a new drive and successfully transferred the old files and folders over to the new Admin by copying the pmm, pmi, and cnm files.  I've re-entered the internet options, and am able to receive and send mail.  But when I close Pegasus I get an "Unrecognized encryption method" error box, then a Windows notice that Pegasus Mail has stoppped working and the usual close option.  Then when re-opening, I get the "Mailbox locked" warning and then I have to re-enable Preview Mode."  So far as I know I have never used any encryption settings.  I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit.  How do I get rid of this error?

To complicate the question, tomorrow I am getting a new computer running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.  Are there any special problems migrating to this new system?

The error is causing Pegasus Mail not to close cleanly so configuration files aren't getting updated and the mailbox lock is not being released.  You might try creating a new Pegasus Mail user and running Pegasus as that user.  If it works fine then you know the problem lies in the Admin mailbox, possibly with a configuration file or one of the files you copied from the old install.

Also, there is a way to add a folder as a mailbox so if you have access to the old mailbox folder you could attach it as a mailbox and copy messages to the new install.  This may not be practical if you have a large number of messages and folders.  This would require that the begin from scratch with creating users in the new install.  You can do this by removing (move for safe keeping)  the entire contents of the \mail folder.  When you restart Pegasus it will look to create a new user.  Pegasus should be shut down whenever working in its folders through Windows Explorer.

On other thing.  Pegasus Mail can not be installed anywhere in the Program Files folder on a Win7 OS.  The file protections Win7 places on files in the Program Files folder prevents Pegasus Mail from operating correctly.

I recently moved from a 32 bit desktop running XP to a 64 bit laptop running Win7 Home Premium.  I had a non-default install of Pegasus on my desktop so I reconfigured it so it followed the default install paths of c:\pmail\programs for the executable files and c:\pmail\mail for the mailboxes.  Once I had that working correctly I installed Pegasus Mail on my laptop insuring that I installed it to the same paths.  During the install I did nothing buy allow the default ADMIN user to be created.  I then replaced the c:\pmail\mail folder on the laptop with the c:\pmail\mail folder from my desktop.  When I started Pegasus on the laptop I had a duplicate of what was on my desktop.  The screen resolution was different so window sizes and fonts needed tweaking but that was it.  The caveat to this is that if you must fix any problems you are having on the existing machine because they will most likely get transferred to the new machine.

I am leaving on vacation tomorrow so won't be able to follow up.  Other list members please jump in.

Thank you for that thorough reply, Brian.  I will go to work on that.

For any others who might be willing to field a follow-up question, I have seen two or three different instructions on carrying Pegasus over from an old installation.  One was to simply copy the entire pmail\mail folder over to the new machine.
Another, if I am not mistaken, was to copy the entire admin folder except the .ini files.  And the third was to copy only the pmm, pmi, and cnm files.  Can anyone help sort this out for me?

Who throws this error? Pegasus Mail or Windows? Can we get a screenshot (Alt + Print, paste into Paint or your favourite image editor to save to file)? You should be able to post one via the forum editor's Options tab?

Michael, here is the message that appears before the Windows crash message . . . .I think it may be a Pegasus message, but it is hard for me to tell.

 Thanks!

Also, Michael, if you can clarify the previous question about which files to copy to the new Pegasus installation, I would be grateful . . .

Personally I believe at some  point it is best to do new complete install accepting default c:\pmail location offered by the installer archive of v4.63. Then restore only the messages folders, *.pmm and *.pmi pairs, plus any new mail messages *.cnm files. Optionally then also any addressbook file pairs and maybe any *.pml distribution list files. That way you leave behind any configuration errors, any old settings and  preferences as well as any old user stored files that might happen to be in home/new mail location. Often those old files not only take up space, are not necessary plus may contain files not ever a part of or used by winpm-32. When moving to a new win7-64 system many things may be different and almost everything containing path information and even names of any executables or rules or .fff files may now need different file name with 64bit versions.  The new clean install will also be in the current c:\pmail\programs path for the  program files and subdirs below. The default home and new mail location c:\pmail\mail\admin or user name remain the same. That plan also allows you to set and review all settings working your way thru Tools, Options and then all Tools, Internet options settings and it is amazing how many old errors or duplications there are. Also probably new machine and display will be different so almost all old screen elements will need resize and save anyhow. I also suggest, unless you are young and have 20/20 vision or better, reset the default Editor font and size as well as default Reader font and size to something that renders better than Arial 10 does on most new high resolution displays.

Save a compressed archive file of all old install and subdirs below for reverence and all \mail and below subdirs if needed later  on old machine and then transfer/copy that archive to save location on the new machine drive.

That is so helpful!  Thank you.  I will remark that I ahve always kept applications including Pegasus on a separate partition (E:) to facilitate any necessary operating system re-installs and/or allow reformatting of c: partition with a minimum of collateral damage.  So unless you warn me of a need to use the C: drive in my 64-bit Win7, I would plan to install the new Pegasus in e:\pmail.

Make sure your preferred drive letter is actually available on the new win7-64 system first.  On many OEM machines that might not be available as it is already in use.

I would strongly suggest you install to the default c:\pmail location or else you may back yourself into a situation where running PCONFIG might be necessary and that 16bit utility application will not run on 64bit OS and you would have to use another 32bit machine to run it or else install and use DosBox application in order to run  PCONFIG to reset the paths and drive letter and update the .sys file  properly.

*Do not* copy any winpmail-32 files to drive of new machine before running the v4.63 installer. If you do you have old data present and also maybe hung in memory cache if you tried to run it and when then running the installer .exe archive the old stuff gets found.
