SMTP Error

Ok, I added the -Z 32 to the target line and here is some of the contents of the file. Some type of server disagreement?? When I look at the POP info for Port 995 it all looks good. Maybe it is an authentication error???

Hello, I get the following SMTP error when trying to send from Pegasus:

A network error occured during connection to the host.
<< No trace information available >>

Everything was working fine, it just started to happen with no change in the configuration. My web hosting provider, Bigcommerce.com, say everything is ok on their end. Just to be sure I downloaded Thunderbird and set it up and it will send and receive to and from my domain's email server.

So I have tried many things to fix it but nothing works. I am using  Pegasus Version 4.63 build 325 on Windows XP pro. My SMTP server uses Port 465 with SSL, authentication required.

Maybe a file got corrupted. I have a native back up all the files I believe to be good but I have no idea what file to restore. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks

If you enable internet session logging a log of the connection attempt will be made.  This log may provide a clue.  The setting can be found in Tools > Internet Options at the bottom of the General tab.  Don't forget to disable it once you are done troubleshooting.  Read the Help file for more on this log.

To rule out a corrupted configuration file try creating a new SMTP host.  Disable the one you have now then create a new one using the same settings you used in Thunderbird .  This will create a new host configuration file.  These are files have an extension of .pnd.

Thanks for the reply. I tried a new definition but still the same outcome, not sending. I tried using the syslog but it appears it only records successful out going messages. I have another SMTP server provided by my cable company and the log file would record those outgoing messages but the log file won't record anything that has an SMTP error like I am getting from my web host provider's SMTP server. I guess one thing I failed to mention was that I have 2 domains with Bigcommerce and both SMTP servers (server800.bigcommerce.com and server5500.bigcommerce.com) won't let me send thru either my domain's SMTP servers. Is it possible they changed something on their end that Pegasus doesn't not agree with? I've been using Pegasus since 1995 and would hate to stop using it. I guess my next try is to do an restore of the .PND files you mentioned.

No internet session log would indicate to me that Pegasus can not connect to the SMTP server.  I would still think the connection attempt would be logged though.

What makes no sense is that you can make the connection with Thunderbird but not with Pegasus.   This would indicate a configuration issue with Pegasus but I am at a loss as to where to tell you to look.  Usually it's either a port issue or authentication issue.  I assume you have confirmed that the SMPT host configured in Pegasus is using the same port and authentication as is Thunderbird.

The .pnd files are viewable with a text editor so comparing the current one with a backed up one might be worthwhile.  Restoring a backed up one couldn't hurt either.  Other than that I don't know where else to tell you to look for.  Hopefully someone else will have some suggestions.

FWIW, there is a old thread that discusses a problem that someone had when Verizon started blocking port 25.  The symptoms were sometimes similar to yours.  Suggestions were offered but thread doesn't contain a resolution.  Still, might be worth a read.  http://community.pmail.com/forums/thread/20972.aspx

There is a big fundamental difference between syslog.pm entries, System messages window, and Session logs *.wpm files. Which are you referring to?

Try starting using -z 32 added to your normal command line or target line staring winpm-32.  Try sending to the mail server(s) and then shut down winpm-32 and go to your home mail box location on drive and view the session log *.wpm file contents. There will be entries for each and every command sent to and received and be careful to delete or alter any account name and password information if you copy or post part of the session log file. The session log should contain any error or at least show the last command and time entry at the point of failure and then close of connection.
