Golly my face is red

[quote user="erchess"]How do I find out how big that file is? I expect it is pretty large. I empty my PMail mail folders every use. I was just without my comp for the weekend and I had 149 emails at my business address and I think 49 at the personal address that uses PMail.

I brought up the "words4.db3" file issue because mine got to 130 megs and then errored out -- I forget the exact circumstance and the exact error message.-I was forced to rename it and let PMail create a new one, and I'm now retraining it.

You could do what I rarely remembered to do: use the "Database cleanup" within Pegasus Mail to trim down your Spamhalter database. It's under Tools | Spam and Content Controls | Spamhalter... and the "database cleanup" button is at the bottom of the pop-up screen. It can't hurt and may help somewhat.

I guess we all know the little blue spinning circle that tells us that windows itself or an application is too busy for new input. I find that I usually get this after I delete a message even though I have begun to operate without the preview plane. I at least thought I knew what was going on when I had the preview plane up. I thought it was preparing to display the next message. Can anyone explain why it gets so busy after a delete when there is no preview plane? Can anyone tell me a way to delete mail without making the program so busy? I have already begun to only use PMail when my computer (core i5 laptop toshiba quosmio with I think 4 gigs of ram) is otherwise idle so I wonder what else I can do, if anything. This may just be a minor annoyance that I have to learn to accept. I remember when no computer could multitask but now that we have multiple core computers I don't expect them to get too busy for new input. Oh well, any responses would be appreciated.

A delay after deletes is not normal.  Two things come to mind to try.

1.  Check the "Deleted messages folder persists between sessions" setting.  If it is enabled, disable it.  The Deleted messages folder will now be deleted each time Pegasus Mail is shut down.  The goal here is to have Pegasus create a new Deleted messages folder to see if the problem is with the existing Deleted messages folder.  The setting is located in Tools | Options | General settings | Advanced settings.  If it is already disabled then this is not the problem unless it has been awhile since you restarted Pegasus.  If you wish to maintain any messages currently in the Deleted messages folder move them to a different folder.  If you want the Deleted messages folder to persist between session you can re-enable the setting after the test.

 2.  Test a permanent (instant?) delete to see if the delay occurs.  To do a permanent delete click the Delete button or press the "D" key then hold down the Crtl key while you click "Yes".  This deletes the message without placing it in the Deleted messages folder.  Be sure to test on a message you know you don't need.

That was a very nice detailed answer Brian gave. Unfortunately it is not on point because I was imprecise in my wording. The problem comes up not when I delete emails but when  I drag them to the Junk or Suspicious Mail folder. Now that that is clear would you Brian or anyone else care to take a shot at the question of why the program gets busy and what I can do about it? I do by the way restart PMail several times a day if that matters. I'm sorry for the confusion here.

Do you have lots of emails sitting in your new email folder?  I have found that this slows Pegasus down in a general sense.  If so, file or delete some of these messages and see if that makes a difference.  I don't use a Junk or Suspicious email folder, but if those are full, you may want to delete some of them as well.

I'm assuming this is not happening with other programs on your computer and that you have plenty of available disk space, etc.

Are you using spam/mail content filters?  Again, I must apologize since I don't have much experience with them.

Hope this is somewhat helpful... I haven't seen this particular problem, so I'm pretty much guessing.  Good luck and let us know what happens!

I have in my inbox at any time only what just came in which has been as many as 50 or 60 messages but I junk file or delete all before going away and I keep the junk folder under 50 emails. I do not experience this with other programs and I do have about 30 percent of my hard drive free and I have four gigs of ram. I am not using content filters other than the ones in the program though it has been suggested that I do so.

How large is your 'words4.db3' file? That's the one that, AFAIK, contains the Spam algorithms or whatever.  Also, how large are your other folders? I had 10,000 in my "old mail" folder (which caused corruption) and still have nearly a thou in New Mail. Even after surgery on Old Mail, I get the busy signal, which to my mind indicates a lot of indexing going on.

You need to look at the file size of the 'words4.db3' file using Windows Explorer.  It resides in your home mailbox directory.  If you don't know where it is go to Help | About Pegasus Mail and click on the 'Info" button.  Look for the Home Mailbox entry which will contain the path to your home mailbox directory.

While in there look at the size of any file with a .PMM extension.  Each .PMM file equates to a Pegasus Mail folders.  Make sure none are near the 2GB size limit.  If you are curious which .PMM file belongs to which Pegasus Mail folder, right click on the folder name in the Pegasus Mail folder window then select 'Folder information'.  It will display the associated .PMM file name.
