Moved Pegasus to new computer now can't delete old messages

Could it be due to Owner Rights? If user name different (the secid string will be different no matter what) then you may need to 'take ownership' of the *.cnm files. Check against newer mails as to ownership and then go to the files that can not be deleted and change/add your current owner userid.

Pegasus ver 4.41

Copied my Pegasus folders to a new computer running Windows 7.

Pegasus seems to be working fine except I can't delete older messages

from the new mail folder.  I can open and read them normally but Pegasus won't delete them

either when open or when selected from the new mail folder view.

I tried clicking the message and properties and got a filename such as

 PMUVG9A4.CNM

Then used windows explorer to find and delete that file.

Pegasus apparently rebuilds the inbox and puts the file back.

I know it's not the greatest plan but if you can tell me what to search for

I'd just like to manually delete the old messages any way I can.

 Thanks!

You can't just copy over to a win7 system, program installer must be run and must be pointed to proper install location for win7 systems which is c:\pmail only. Be sure to use v4.63 installer as v4.41 is old and not designed to be used with win7 systems. A copy from old machine to new win7 will only work if the old was installed to c:\pmail location on old machine. If install to somewhere else or under any program files location it won't and can't work with a win7 system as that area is not writeable by programs on a win7 UAC setup.

If installed to anything other than c:\pmail on a win-64 system would involve running PCONFIG utility which is 16bit and won't run on any 64bit sytstem without aid of another application than runs 16bit applications.

You will need the guide from http://www.vandenbogaerde.net/pegasusmail/pf_pmfiles.html

to know what files are what names and extensions and then to restore from the old install only the necessary message folders and files and new mail messages *.cnm files. You do not want any old settings or preferences or any old .ini or .cfg files coming over to new machine. All restored files must also be checked to make sure they are not marked read only at the OS level and if so that attribute must be removed before Pegasus Mail can use them.

The v4.63 installer will create a default user \admin and with home and new mail location being c:\pmail\mail\admin and that is where you place the restored data from old machine.

Hello Jerry, I'm just now reading your 2nd reply above.

I will try that in a day or 2 thanks for your help.

 --------------

 This is my earlier reply----

I know my situation is not ideal but--

pegasus IS working on the Win 7 computer.

Everything works except there are about 20 older messages in the new mail folder that I can't delete.

Yes I did copy the Pegasus folder to the same location on the new machine.

Where I went wrong was temporarily removing a sub folder.

I opened Pegasus while the folder was missing and it only showed a few messages.

I replaced the folder and opened pegasus and it showed all old messages.

Good I thought but after that I can only delete new messages received since then

The oldest ones are just stuck there.  Readable but not removable.

I hate to do a new install as I have 3 identities set up and all are working.

I have multiple signatures and all work.

Maybe some day when I have time I'll install the newer ver that you mention above.

In the meantime can I just clean out the inbox.

Everything works now except those "stuck" old messages.

If I could ditch those I'd be done.

Is there a way to do that?

  Thanks again!

New mail messages are raw *.cnm files. Where are they located now and in just one location or more than one? Are any marked R attribute at OS level? You can open the *.cnm files in notepad just to identify the header information to see which are the ones you want to delete and delete them while winpm-32 is closed. On restart only  the remaining new mail message will be seen and normally only those that have not been read unless you have checked to allow read mail to remain in new folder. New unread messages in regular messages folders are data in *.pmm and *.pmi file pair for that folder.

The only other exception is when one has mounted another mailbox using Folders, Add mailbox to list function.

Program is only going to manage or do anything else with new mail messages unless they are in the new mail location on drive as shown when you do Help, About and Info button display. That never is more than one location for any one username. Each username is a subdir under \mail expressed as \mail\~8  and also shown in pmail.usr file in \mail location.

It is not unusual to find somebody who has done copy and restore and had old single user mode install an then new style mult user mode install to have .cnm files in old \mail plus also in new \<user> location and mess must be handled manually at file level in OS provided tools.

Update to later version and new install does not mean all old *.pnd file information must be lost and that is where all the connection and download and upload information is stored. I suggest just printing those out and using for reference to then use the GUI to recreate as recquireed.

Any d-;list files and any old address books may also be restored and used *if* handled properly and placed in the  proper location in the new install and done while winpm-32 is closed.

So - you may delete new mails in new mail folder, but not the old ones. Hmm - there must be wrong something with the old mails or their files (CNM).

Did you copy them from an backup on an CD/DVD?  Than these files have fileattriute readonly set (have a look in explorer - maybe you have to add the column for fileattirbutes first). Set the files to normal / not readonly  (on closed Pegasus) and Pegasus may delete them.
