How to save column widths in new Mail Folder (or any folder).

When using list mode the window you are trying to adjust the column widths in must not be maximized. See this thread:

Changed the font for the headings resulting in column width for Date/Time and Message Size being too small. I can use the mouse to change the widths, but upon opening the view later, the old widths are back again. How do I save the modified widths?
