Pegasus won't start
Get past the logon screen (enter user name) then when loading new mail folder Pmail hangs. Checked both (multi-user configuration) mail boxes and there aren't any mega files as has been the problem in other cases. There are, however, some 0 byte .pmi files. Is that a problem?

Tried reinstalling using the 'update' option on the installation screen; no joy.
So mailboxes are persisting and the error should be there.

Another problem while opening the inbox may be a corrupted CNM-File with a new mail. On closed Pegasus move all CNM-Files to another directory. Open Pegasus and copy back CNM-Files one-by-one. One of them may hangup Pegasus.

Is there any antivirus allowed to scan your mailboxes (specially CNM-Files) on read? For testing disable it.

Greetings -

I've seen this problem discussed before but none of the answers seem to apply.

Is it possible to do a reinstall without trashing my mail box(es) and other configurations like PMServer?

Not quite sure where to begin. Is the information you sent me January 15th still your current working configuration on machine in question? I did receive the copy of the old pm server document and do vaguely remember that old setup.  Have not heard or seen anybody else using that old setup for a long time now and is also rare to have users using the  -E and alternate configuration now. Is that win7 machine 32bit ot 64bit and have run PCONFIG to verify what is actually set now? Is everything currently ok on the "server" machine? What OS version is running on the "server" machine? Is the same win7 "client" machine still the one being used? Is the same mapped drive letter shown still the current mapped drive on the "server" machine for both home and new mail locations?

Hi Jerry!

Thanks for the reply.

The setup/configuration is the same as working configuration back in Jan. The problem is on the 'server' machine, an XP-HE 32bit laptop. Everything is (was) working fine on the client machine (Win7). In fact, I can log onto Pmail on that machine with my user name, access my mailbox on the laptop server just fine. Pegasus is running locally on both machines. It appears as though the laptop (server) machine has developed a distinct distaste for Pegasus (grin).

Since my initial post I've purged Pegasus from the server machine using Control panel/add-remove progs, uninstalled everything I can find that remotely refers to Pegasus and tried reinstalling. Still get the error message and won't load beyond the 'Restoring new mail folders' (an approximation of the message - it's just a quick flash on the screen). I included a graphic of the error screen cap. in a previous post but it's been detoured for review by the sysop since I suspect it's a large enough post to be suspect.  I'm at the point where I need to purge everything so I can start from scratch. But when I think I have, and reinstall, the problem persists.

OK, what have I done recently that would be suspect? -

I attempted to install a Canon scanner software on the laptop. There was an error thrown when attempting to install the OmniPage OCR module of the scanner software. Another module of the scanner installation aborted as well. At this point is where I experienced the problem with Pmail. Related? I have no idea. Removed all scanner software and drivers and associated modules via Control Panel. No joy. Uninstalled Pmail via Control Panel. Attempting to remove BearHTML Renderer using the uninstall .exe file in the pmail folder and it reported Pmail was currently running, close down and .... etc. This is after removing pmail from the machine. While it's probably not a wise thing to do, in desperation to clean Pmail from the machine I sent the entire pmail folder to the recycle bin.

Thinking this would no allow a 'clean' install, I proceeded in that direction. Only to find I get the same error/hang at the final operation of the opening Pmail window.

I'm wondering if there's something in the registery that needs to be deleted or edited? I've always been able to breath life back into my ol' faithful WinPMail but I'm at a total loss at this point.

Dennis,

Is the error you are getting a C++ error?  If so, there is a new message with a malformed subject line that is causing the error and the crash.  Move all .cnm files out of the mailbox directory then startup Pegasus and see if all well.  If so, do a text search of the moved .cnm files for "aol.com".  Once you have those identified, open each with a text editor and look for any with a Subject: header that looks like "=a_whole_bunch_of_random_alphanumerics_with_some_UTF-8_encoding=".  These are the culprits.  You will see that they are spam and can be deleted.  Move the rest of the .cnm files back into the mailbox folder.

Could you verify using the win7 machine that you can actually read and use your mail messages, both in a folder or as new mail? If so it sound like all the basic data files are ok on the server machine but the whole configuration is messed up on that server machine. The whole configuration will need to be cleaned up and clean new full install on the server machine. First step would be to back up the basic folders and new mail messages and store in safe location. The really tricky parts of the pmserver configuration actually are apparent all working at this time and either user can operate ok right now. It is just that any attempt to run winpm-32 on the server machine fails.

It seems a crash or improper or incomplete of writes to drive did not take place and all is now scrambled on drive as far as configuration and your settings in your ..pmail\mail\admin or your username location and attempts to reinstall have not succeeded but the installer exe has not overwritten any of your user created data. The installer never knowingly deletes or overwrites anything belonging to user and only places and writes what is included in the installer archive files which does not include any configuration and settings initially. They are all created on first run or by settings and preferences or which blocks are checked in installer..

First, thanks to Jerry & Brian for taking a stab at this problem. After spending all day wiping, installing, both several times it appears there's something hidden deep in the bowls of this aging laptop that's beyond my understanding to discover. All by way of saying I'm abandoning this effort in favor of getting PMail set up on another, newer machine. Thus far it's been successful so let's consider this a dead issue.

Just as a note to anyone who might be interested - when I installed an earlier version (3.x), it loaded and ran fine. When I applied the update, Peg wouldn't proceed beyond the logon screen

After getting Peg installed and configured on the other computer, I copied the backed up contents of both user mail boxes into the new mail folder and they all presented themselves without incident: all the messages were there and intact. Jerry - the Win7 machine reads and writes emails to the newly mapped mail folder on an XP Pro 64bit machine where the new install of Pmail resides as the new 'server'. ....Interesting!

Again, thanks to everyone who took the time to read and reply; I really appreciate your help. Sorry but sometimes it's best just to put the old dog down.
