I am willing to let this old dog lie and move on.
You all have been wonderful trying to help a total stranger who will never be able to repay your kindness.
I am going to try what I can this last morning. I'll try the suggestions in the 3 posts directly above.
FYI- Very early I tried to copy old files from old version and dropped them into the
C:\PMAIL\ MAIL\ADMIN\ directory as instructed at the beginning of this long saga.
I copied CNM, PMM/PMI, PMR/PM! and a few others from the list at the beginning.
I got pretty much the result I have now-- Folders show old data 2004 and earlier.
I tried several variations of that and finally gave up.
I deleted that 1st new install and started over with a clean new install.
This time I've tried linking/adding a new mailbox to the old pegasus folders with more or less the same result.
I only see old files in old folders pre 2005.
I've tried re-arranging my OLD ver files and re-liking.
Yes there is/was a /D directory in the old version.
I've tried linking to it with the MAIL/D and I've tried copying all the /D files up one level into the MAIL/ and linking that.
Either way I see the same old folder data.
So this is where I am now-- a clean new install that has been un-successful linking to the old folders.
I've disconnected the added mailbox link and got my new install working to poll all 3 of my pop3 addresses.

I think Jerry's comments 2 messages up assume I still have the old files copied into the new install??
That is not the case. Also there are no other subdirectories in the old pegasus version.
It was .....\MAIL\D and that's all. I tried it that way -no good so I copied all the \D files into the \MAIL directory
and tried the link again with the same result.

Today I will try Michael's suggestion above
1. It might be necessary to delete the file hierarch.pm in
the old mailbox you're trying to link in (maybe rename and only delete
after seeing success of some kind, trays will be gone if doing so).
2. It might help to run mbxmaint_ui.exe (from Pegasus Mail's ...\programs\ subdirectory) for fixing folder indexes of your old folder files.
Failing that- I will move on with a clean new install and start housekeeping with a new-more or less empty house!
I can access the old data using the old pegasus if I need an address or a receipt I will just copy paste the info into notepad or word or a new
mail message. (Brian I know you've fussed at me to throw out my old Pegasus version and never run it again but it is the ONLY way I have
to access my data from the last 9 years.)
Thanks very much- My ball-cap is tipped to you all.....
Peace!!

************* final edit**************
I have copied the old address book files to the new install and now have what appears to be full access
to my old address books. This is great BUT I wonder if using the old address book data will in ANY way cause problems
in the new install. I'd hate to find some time down the road that my address books aren't quite up to par due to
the use of these old files
