[quote user="erchess"]I have forgotten how but for a while I got rid of the preview plane but now it is back. How do I get rid of it, preferably forever? If I find out that an update to pmail changed my settings I will get rid of pmail. Any help appreciated.

On the top main toolbar push the List button to return to list mode. That will get rid of the Preview mode until it is necessary to create a new pmail.ini file for some reason or you do new clean install of a new version. Preview mode is the installer default now.
There are and never have been any automatic updates to Pegasus Mail or any "online updates" like with some programs. Each version must be downloaded and installer exe run to do the update.
What you describe can happen with improper or incomplete closure and write to drive. That would cause new default pmail.ini to be created.
