Wondering if PMail would be right for me.
This made me check my settings for my identities as I normally use "File/Selective Mail Download...".   This provides the three icons "Mark for Retrieval", "Mark for Deletion" & "Mark for Both".     This enables deletion at the ISP server, or not, as one wishes.    So although I have ticked the box in the Tools/Internet Options/Receiving POP3/Edit under General tab as you describe, it only deletes automatically if I have selected Deletion or Both icon -  am I missing something
This is an excellent example of the power and flexibility of Pegasus Mail.  Selective Mail Download is a feature that allows you to preview the contents of your POP3 mailbox then decide what you want to do with it.  The Selective Mail Download topic in the Pegasus Mail manual makes for an interesting read because it indicates that the intent of this feature was to minimize connection time which was important back in the days of dial-up and pay-per-minute connections (Pegasus Mail, you're showing your age).  The value today is that it allows interactive control of which messages you retrieve and/or delete from the server.  This is different from the automated polling that is configured in Tools/Internet Options/Receiving (POP3) which is what the "Delete mail from host once it

has been successfully retrieved" setting pertains to.  The automated polling has server side filtering capabilities but that's a subject of it's own.

I'd been using Hotmail for quite some time. Now Microsoft is doing away with Hotmail and making everyone go to a new version of Outlook. You can still use your Hotmail email accounts, but there were some other things I could do with Hotmail that I can't do with Outlook. I've been looking for another email program that will let me do the things that Outlook doesn't. There are several things, but I'm mostly interested in two.

1.) How many different email accounts can you have with PMail? I've got 5 seperate accounts with Hotmail that I'd like to use within PMail; receive, send, etc.

2.) Is it possible to save emails received in PMail to folders I've created in My Documents? I receive regular emails from various senders that I save in My Documents on a temporary basis. When I need to delete them it's much easier to just go to do so.

I looked through several pages in the Community to try and find answers to my question before posting. I apologize for asking two questions in one posting, but I'm getting frustrated with this whole Outlook thing. I would greatly appreciate any help I can get.

Pegasus Mail is an email client that can be configured to retrieve mail (via POP3) from as many hosted mailboxes as you care to configure.  Understanding the Pegasus Mail concepts of Users and Identities is key to making this work seamlessly.  Pegasus Mail can also be configured to access hosted mailboxes via IMAP.  So, if you have 5 outlook.com account you can configure Pegasus Mail with 5 identies, each retrieving from a different account, or 1 identity retrieving from all accounts, or any combination.  You could also create multiple Pegasus Mail users, with multiple identities per user.  This can better differentiate mail (e.g. personal accounts vs. work accounts) in cases where this is important.

Not directly.  Pegasus Mail uses it's own internal folder structure.  That said, it is possible to attach Windows directories as added mailboxes.  This allows you to save messages in a specific windows directory.  This is often used to archive messages.  It would be better to use Pegasus Mail folders and control deletions from within Pegasus Mail.  Pegasus Mail has extensive filtering capability which can automate mail handling including deleting messages based on certain conditions, including by message age.

You can test Pegasus Mail without affecting your current setup by configuring the POP3 hosts in Pegasus Mail to not delete mail on the server.  This way you can give Pegasus Mail a good test while still being able to work as you are accustomed to.  A caveat will be timing.  You will need Pegasus Mail to retrieve messages before they are deleted on the server or moved out of the server inbox by another email client or by browser access.

Test, ask questions, search the forum, test some more.  We'll help any way we can.  I hope we are welcoming you to Pegasus Mail!

Brian answered your questions quite succinctly and I'd hasten to add, I'm not a real PMail power user. That said, I find I have all the flexibility in managing my messages from within Pegasus as I can imagine anyone needing. As for multiple accounts and so forth, my wife and I both use Pegasus over our home network using my virtual domain to access my mail server. I have a few dozen accounts or addresses on the server and find it easy to manage it all with Pegasus.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Internet history - Everyone here has been extremely helpful to me in the past so I'm sure you'll find all the support you need.

Hello bfluet,

I appreciate the input. Please let me see if I'm following you right or not.

I can set up folders in Pegasus Mail for the messages I would normally want to save in My Documents, hold them there as long as needed, and then delete them when I'm ready. If I'm following you right I think I should be able to get everything set-up okay, with the key words in that being "should be".

I've got to admit, I saw quite a few of your posts while looking through trying to find the answers to my questions before posting myself. I was really hoping to receive a reply from you due to your replies not only being helpful but also detailed just right.

You may reply to this at your convenience.

Regards,

Bill

I recommend easing into Pegasus Mail if you have that luxury.  It's not that Pegasus Mail is difficult but it is different.  I mentioned the importance of getting familiar with the concepts of Users and Identities but it sounds like it would benefit you to actually see and work with the folder structure before making Pegasus Mail your "production" email client.

In my previous post I mentioned a method of testing without deleting mail off the server.  I suggest doing that.  Install Pegasus Mail and configure it with just one of your accounts.  In the POP3 host configuration be sure not to enable the "Delete mail from host once it has been successfully retrieved" setting".  Now just play.  Play with the folder structure, look at List mode vs. Preview mode.  FWIW, I prefer List mode because it allows me to keep multiple folder windows open on my Pegasus Mail desktop.  As an introduction to Identities you may want to create an Identity for this account.  You would then have two identities (the first one being 'Default') with which to work with.

It will take a bit of effort to figure out the advanced capabilities of

Pegasus Mail so I hope you are the type who likes to figure out how to

get things to work better, faster and easier.

Be aware that HTML handing has been greatly improved since the release of v4.63 Pegasus Mail was released.  These improvements come in the form of updated HTML renderers, one called IERenderer and the other called BearHTML.  You will want to upgrade to the most current versions.  Both are available in the downloads section of this community site.

A couple of other things worthy of knowing.  Pegasus Mail must NOT be installed anywhere in the \Program Files directory.  It won't work if you do, trust me on this.  Stick with the default location of c:\pmail.  This will also make it easier to troubleshoot any problems.  Also, once Pegasus Mail is installed, maintain a backup of at least the mailbox directory(ies) but the whole \pmail directory would be better.  This will make it much easier to recover in the event of a system crash or should you just totally screw something up while playing.

Brian,

This made me check my settings for my identities as I normally use "File/Selective Mail Download...".    This provides the three icons "Mark for Retrieval", "Mark for Deletion" & "Mark for Both".     This enables deletion at the ISP server, or not, as one wishes.    So although I have ticked the box in the Tools/Internet Options/Receiving POP3/Edit under General tab as you describe, it only deletes automatically if I have selected Deletion or Both icon -  am I missing something?
