How to define list of local e-mail addresses?

Hello,

I've decided to use local users insteat.

So there is no need for the filter rule now.

Bye Martin

Hello,

my mercury insctance is running for a long time in test enviroment by now. Now I want to finish configuration and to go live.

Long time ago I've configured Mercury to deliver all e-mails to one folder. I want to keep this. But I want to have a list of valid e-mail addresses. And for non-valid e-mail addresses I want to send a NDR message. I have to build a manually list.

What's the best and the easiest way to do it?

BTW: In front of Mercury I am running an extra spam filter. So I have disabled spam filter on Mercury some time ago.

Bye Martin

Well, that depends. Do you receive email by SMTP (MercuryS) or POP3 (MercuryD)? I assume the list of valid addresses are your local recipient addresses (not sender addresses), but is that a fairly long or a fairly short list?

Hello Rolf,

it's tranport by SMTP.

We are running two mail servers, MS Exchange with personal e-mail addresses and Mercury Mail for group mail addresses for automatically processing in our workflows. Mails are routed by different e-mail domains.

The list for Mercury Mail will contain about 50 entries. Yes, they are our local recipients for Mercury Mail.

Where and how to define this list?

Bye Martin

You should probably implement it on your SMTP gateway.

An SMTP reject is infinitely more preferable than accepting the mail then generating a bounce.

But to do it on Mercury:

A domain mailbox, by definition, accepts all mail to *@domain.

You could use a filter rule to check the recipients and perform the desired action.

Maybe checking against a mailing list member file (can't recall if this test can be used for recipients as well as senders...) or individually in the filter.

This WON'T catch  bcc's though, as only the mail body is available to filters, not the SMTP envelope addresses (unless your spam appliance writes the actual delivery address into the message).

You are also opening yourself to being a backscatter source.

Hello dilberts_left_nut,

I'm trying to get it running with a global rule. I've selected Rule Type Scan list... Before I've done a mailing list.

I have to enter list's simple name to the rule. What is meant for this point?

Bye Martin

You should not send a NDR message back at this stage as it will go to a probably spoofed address and will cause backscatter.  NDRs should be sent by your "extra spam filter in front of Mercury".  If your first-line server can't identify bad addresses then you have no way of ensuring NDRs will go back to the correct sender.

I would strongly advise against sending them in the way you indicate.

Hello Paul,

I know what backscatting means. But I haven't started this topic here for a philosophic discussion. ;)

I have a technical problem. I have problems to define a list of valid local e-mail addresses and to use it with a global filter rule.

I've added a mailing list (mlf file).

I've added a global rule with this list. But the list is not used.

I'm not sure about the sytnax for the entry "If the sender is subscribed to this list". I've tried the filename and the filename without the file extension. Both with no success.

It is just the name of the list.  If you go the Configuration / Mailing lists, it is the name in the left column.  I have a list named "test" and the filter works with just that name.

^^ This.

You want to filter on the recipient, which the 'list member' rule doesn't do.

You will need to put a rule for each address in the filter definition.

I still think you are doing this all wrong. :)
