New Mail folder trashed

By default messages go to the Main Folder, they are not lost.  There is an option in menu  Tools/Option/Basic settings that shows where they go.

Pmail 4.63 on W7.

I had the "mailbox locked" followed by Pmail hanging syndrome.  I deleted the two most recent days' of .CNM files.  I did not delete any other file, except the lock file.

Pmail then started up, but the New Mail folder only has the most recent message in it.  There were about 100, when last open, all having been read, except the

two most recent, both of which were small, text  only files.  Only the most recent one survived.

Are the messages totally lost, or are they possibly in a differently-named folder now?  Where should I look?

Thanks for any help.
