Strange happenings -- Please help

I was able to solve the problem after finding out that when I tried to copy my PMAIL folder to another drive, one particular file could not be copied.  I looked for the origination folder of the file, saw it was created on the day the problems started, figured that must be it and deleted it.  Voila!

I was able to solve the problem after finding out that when I tried to copy my PMAIL folder to another drive, one particular file could not be copied.  I looked for the origination folder of the file, saw it was created on the day the problems started, figured that must be it and deleted it.  Voila!

I recently bought a new computer and re-installed PMail without problems. In the last few days, each time I open the program an email pops up repeatedly in my new mail folder. It appears to be from the company from which I purchased my computer as it shows "Your Order has been Shipped" and a July 6 date. When opened the following message can be read:

"This message contains binary or non-textual data that cannot be previewed within Pegasus Mail.

   Filename:   ÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌÌ

You can work with this file in the message reader's 'Attachments' page."

There are no attachments. When opened, the email contains no subject, to, or from headers. Each occurrence contains the same date and each is the same size. It appears automatically, without my checking for new mail There is no raw view, and worst of all, it can't be deleted. Even more puzzling is that it continues to multiply until I exit PMAlL. Then it starts again when I re-open the program.

I hope someone can help me get rid of this annoyance.

 Thanks!

I don't know what is going on with the message but the fact that it multiplies makes me wonder if you have a POP3 host that is being automatically checked for mail and is repeatedly retrieving the same message because it is configured not to delete mail on the server.  Keep in mind that the Internet options settings are identity specific.

Thanks, Brian. I appreciate your taking the time to reply. I doubt that is the problem since there is nothing on the server. I download my mail with the selective mail dl option and I have enabled the "idle" function in the SMTP window with 0 seconds for checkiing new mail. So pmail can't be going online to check mail (can it?) unless I tell it to...and still the dopey thing multiplies. I've checked for malware and viruses, but nothing shows up.

Back to the drawing board.

If you go into your Pegasus Mail  New Mail directory (ie; c:\pmail\mail\admin etc ), with Windows Explorer you should be able to find a CNM type file with length of zero, or perhaps with very small size (ie 1K)  that you can open in Notepad. It would have all the key header lines missing.

In either case, rename the file to something like abc123.cnmx, and restart Pegasus Mail, your problem should be gone :-))

P.S There are other files that can cause problems, if their file length is zero, and they can be given the same renaming trick. After which if your problems go away, just use Windows Explorer to delete all/any of these renamed files.

Thanks, Martin. I'd already been there and done that. I also just uninstalled and reinstalled pmail and everything came back the same as before. I can't even start over with a clean slate :-(

An uninstall of Pegasus doesn't remove the mailboxes so the reinstall just reuses that content which is where most of the configuration settings are.  To start clean you would need to delete your existing \MAIL directory.  If you currently have a default installation (C:\PMAIL\PROGRAMS with mailboxes in C:\PMAIL\MAIL) here is what I would try.  Copy your current C:\PMAIL directory to C:\PMAIL_OLD (I would back it up to an additional location as well to be extra safe).  Uninstall Pegasus then delete the remaining C:\PMAIL directory.  Now do a new install of Pegasus Mail and configure.  Hopefully the problem will now be gone.  We can help you retrieve files from the old mailbox(es) if needed.

Hint:  The content of the pmail.ini file from the old primary users mailbox (\ADMIN if default) can be a valuable reference during configuration of the new install.

Thank you Brian! It worked. No more mysterious regenerating ghost emails :-)

Finally i have discovered how to solve this error...

You can solve it deleting the folder IMC-3E8 from your Pegasus user's folder (this folder is regenerated when you open Pegasus the next time)

This thread is old but I hope this will be useful for somebody ;-)
