RFC 5322 compliant?

There probably were angle bracket but the content that was provided with the failed delivery messages sent to postmaster only showed From: firstname,lastname@domain.com.

This user has come back into the office so I have since discovered that the failures were on messages that she was trying to forward.  The hotmail address was in the cc list.  She doesn't remember whether she was bouncing or forwarding with edits but says messages sent directly to the hotmail address go fine.  That's all I need to know.  No need to dig into this any further at this time.

Can anyone explain what this means? We've never had this become an issue before:

I've no idea what Hotmail is complaining about in particular - rfc 5322 is just the current version of the email message format and is little changed from the original (rfc 822).  Pegasus Mail has been very good at following the standards on mail it creates, so it is not easy to understand what's happening here.

 Have you tried it again?

I've tried sending mail to more than a few msn.com recipients and they all seem to bounce. The error message appears to be sent from the postmaster at mail.hotmail.com whereas the recipient's address is to msn.com:

The support folks at my mail server insist that it's an issue with the formatting of the From: field in my email client (Pegasus) yet this is a recent problem and I've done nothing I can think of that would have had any affect on the configuration of sent mail formatting. Besides, I've been through all the settings in PMail, at least those I'm familiar with, and can't find anything that would, from the looks of things, point outgoing mail to hotmail as opposed to sending it to the intended recipient. Is there something I'm overlooking in this respect?

Is there something/someplace in Pmail where the rfc thing is or can be addressed? I keep getting this reply with every attempt to send to this particular person:

I don't find anything anywhere that would indicate how this gets changed???? But then, it's only with this one address so any clue on what brings it about?

An internet search yielded a post where someone fixed this problem by adding a reply-to address to his messages.  Poster was using Moodle (whatever that is) but it may be worth testing with a default reply-to address configured.  Tools > Options > Outgoing mail > Sending Mail

Thank you, Brian. I did discover that that particular install of PMail was not configured with a default reply to address so fixed that. However it didn't solve the problem, unfortunately. I think I found the same reference to the Moodle post you refer to. There are two recipients now that bounce with this same rfc complaint from my mail server, Isomedia, during sorting:

It seems as though only messages sent from my wife's computer end up being flagged, if you will, with this rfc822 thing. I really apologize if I'm not using the correct terminology for all this stuff.

I think I have found the problem and it has to do with the message id string and I sent you message via direct e-mail moments ago detailing my findings. I think it has to with one version you use with your LAN being quite old and using the localhost designation whereas later versions use account.domain to construct the message id field.

I don't remember exactly which version number began the newer format and in the past there were problems with the use of the localhost designation to construct the message id.

Yes, and I really appreciate all your time looking into this, Jerry.

I did verify that the other computer is running PM4.12 plus mail sent from my computer is flagged withe proper message ID while messages sent from the other one over the LAN continue to be flagged from localhoast as you point out. I'll go about upgrading the other machine to 4.63 tommorrow - my brain is numb from dealing with this today.

Again, thanks to you and everyone offering solutions.

I have one user receiving this error when sending to a hotmail.com address.  Thing is, I have 10 users running a shared install of Pegasus Mail v4.63 with all messages being processed by Mercury.  Only one user is seeing the problem though it is possible that she is the only one sending to a hotmail address.  Testing to be done on that front once I have the ok from the recipient so use the address for testing.

What controls the "localhost" mentioned in the previous posts of this thread?

"localhost" was used in the older versions when forming the message ID header.  Since you are using the latest version that should not arise.

Have you checked the 'From:' header - mentioned previously as a possible cause?
