settings help - can't send local mail

Well, removing the local domains fixed the problem. I tried that earlier... not sure why it didn't work. Maybe I needed to restart the program/service.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Hey guys.

Been using pegasus since the days of win3.11.

Bought a license for mercury, but can't get it to work properly.

It's loaded on a win7-32 pc. I want to be able to use that pc to send mail from various computers on the lan. It's really just for sending notifications when s server goes down, the power goes out, etc.

I am using the relay module with a dyn account.

It works (tested with gmail/etc), so long as I am sending mail to a domain NOT the same as the company name (abc.com). Mail sent to any address on that domain fails. I see messages about possible loopback in the logs.

At this point, I think I've messed up so many settings I would just like info to wipe all settings out and which ones to edit to make it work.

???

I'm not sure I understand this.  When your power goes down all computers on the lan will go down, won't they?
I am using the relay module with a dyn account.
Do you mean MercuryC, the SMTP relay client?  What host are you using?
It works (tested with gmail/etc), so long as I am sending mail to a domain NOT the same as the company name (abc.com). Mail sent to any address on that domain fails. I see messages about possible loopback in the logs.
What entries have you got in the "local domains" section of the Mercury core configuration?  Each user on the local domain must be defined and have a mailbox (unless you use a domain mailbox).

Thanks for the reply. Let me start over... I can jump around and not be clear sometimes.

There is a win7-32 pc on the network (no domain). It's got mercury on it. The only purpose for this is so the servers on the network will have an OPEN relay to send notification emails through. They have several programs that have no provision for an authentication username/password, only have a host name. An example of this is the UPS mgmt software. It sends email when the power fails. The hard drive monitoring s/w also sends emails.

I had a similar pc (windows xp) setup with mercury on it for this. It worked for years perfectly. Had to retire the machine and forgot to get the settings off it before it was trashed, so I know the process works.

I need to configure mercury so that any pc on the lan (192.168.1.1-192.168.1.254) can send mail WITHOUT any authentication at all. These emails would be going to hosts on the net somewhere as we have no internal mail servers.

To send mail, I have loaded the relay client, and am using an account @ dyn.com for sending. I've got an account there that allows me to send 450 emails/day.

So far, I am able to send mail to addresses that are NOT on the 'local domains' list. I'm not even sure I need entries in that section. Currently, I have entries of ms811 and ms811.org in there. When I send mail to any address on those domains I notice a 'possible loopback' error in the log files.

At this point I've changed so many settings I need info on how to wipe out all settings and what to do exactly after that...

As long as mercury doesn't need to recieve any mail for those domains, remove them from the "local domains" list.

I have. Still can't send to them.

I need a reset and rebuild.

Simplest way to start again is to delete the Mercury root directory (usually C:\Mercury) and all sub-directories below it, and then re-install.

TBH, I haven't seen many problems that need this sort of drastic action.

This is handled in MercuryS / Connection control.  Put in the start and end addresses of your LAN as "allow", and in the bottom Relaying control section ensure the top 2 checkboxes are ticked and the bottom 2 are clear.

OK

So, external mail (anything not ms811.org) is being delivered via your relay host.  Local mail (somebody@ms811.org) is not.  Do you have "somebody" defined as a local user?  It's in Configuration / Manage local users.

As ms811.org email is handled completely by godaddy, I don't have any users defined at all.

The box is basically an open relay for server warning issues (raid failure, UPS on battery, etc). If the software we use had the ability to input sending credentials, I would not need mercury.

Also...

When I use the ctrl-N (send mail) test. It says it's coming from postmaster@ms811.org. I've looked through all the config files and can't change this.

Wish I had kept the old machine around...

Remove any domain that is not handled by Mercury from the local domains list. Just have the Windows hostname and IP address (in square brackets) there.

Can you give an example please?

The pc's name is 'aardvark'. The lan ip is 192.168.1.10

Well, simply something like this then:

aardvark aardvark

aardvark [192.168.1.10]

I assume it will only act as a relay using MercuryC for delivery and won't be accessible from the Internet at all.

Yes, delivery only.

Note that you will probably have to restart Mercury for the change to take effect, though.
