Where does my PMAIL folder need to go? - New win 8 pc

Glad to hear all appears well.

If you had any programs configured in Tools > Options > Incoming mail > Content viewers you might need to fix those.  You also might have to fix the commandline to the browser if you had entered one in Tools > Options > Incoming mail > Hyperlinks.

Hi, can someone remind me where the PMAIL folder should sit? My windows 7 PC has been upgraded to Windows 8 and have a backup of PMAIL which I'm ready to copy into somewhere. I can't remember if it needs to be in the Program folder or in Documents. And will Pegasus 4.63 work properly in Windows 8? Thanks!

The important thing here is that if you plan to restore from the backup you MUST place Pegasus Mail in the same location as it was when the backup was made.  This refers to the paths to the Pegasus Mail program directory (default is C:\PMAIL\PROGRAMS) and the mailbox directory (default is C:\PMAIL\MAIL).  Hope that it was in the default location of as this could save some aggravation.  Be advised that Pegasus Mail will not work if located anywhere in the \Program Files directory but that is true with Win7 as well it wasn't there if it was working.

Once you restore from the backup you will need to do a Pegasus Mail installation (W32-463.EXE) over top of your restored one to create the appropriate registry entries and file associations in Win8.

Alternatively, you can install Pegasus Mail on Win8 and then restore the mailbox directories but it is still a necessity that the paths to the \Programs directory and the \Mail directory be identical to what they were when the backup was made.  I can't emphasize enough that this is a must in order to restore an entire mailbox directory!

Thanks so much for your help, Brian. Yes, now I remember, Pegasus Mail was in its own folder called PMAIL, in the C drive. I never interfered with default paths.

Just to make sure I'm doing this exactly right, here's what I did. Before my Windows 7 PC crashed, I was able to back up the entire PMAIL folder and it now sits on a portable drive.  So first I should just plonk this entire PMAIL folder into the C Drive of my Windows 8 computer? Or must I create a new folder in the C drive and call it PMAIL, and then copy the contents of my backed up PMAIL folder into that file? And after I've done one of those two, install Pegasus 4.63 and everything will just be there as I left it?

If the original location was C:\PMAIL then that is where you want to end up.  It is your choice whether you let the \PMAIL directory be created during the restore or whether you create it manully and then restore the contents.  Either should work.

Keep your backup safe, just in case.

Thank you once again, Brian. It worked perfectly - everything looks as it should and the entire thing took seconds.

It's nice when things go right.
