Thanks a lot.

I notice when creating new mail accounts via Mercury where the name is more than 8 characters that the folder name is truncated to 8. I understand why the 8 character limit used to exist (I started out using CPM, then MS-DOS), but that restriction has not been with us for many years.

It would be reassuring to know if the 2GB limit will also be removed.

Cheers!

Hi, I have just begun using Pegasus as I am running Windows7. I would like to import my address book from Windows Mail to Pegasus. I have exported my address book onto my desktop in CSV, but Pegasus will not accept it. What am I doing wrong?. Not much experience with different codes, so any help is appreciated.

Many thanks.

If you can export your address book to vCard format then I have a utility (PMVCARD) here at:

http://community.pmail.com/files/folders/pegadd/entry40620.aspx

that will convert vCards streams into Pegasus Mail addressbook format. This would be much easier to import that any CSV conversion.

Will CSV import/export be available in the next version of Pegasus Mail? It is such an easy format to work with.

Will CSV import/export be available in the next version of Pegasus Mail? It is such an easy format to work with.

two things.

 1. CSV will always be available, and there should be an option, in the source exporter, to select the field delimiter. It can be a comma or a tab. For import to Pegasus Mail it must be a tab

2. The order of the field data is critical and must be identical. Secondly, fields such as Firstname and Lastname do not have an equivalent in Pegasus Mail but exist as a Fullname field. Importantly the physical address data is structured completely differently. In most sources the individual parts of a mailing address are in separate fields, ie Street Number, Street Name, Town etc.  In Pegasus Mail these are combined.

In order to match field name orders, the source CSV must be imported first to a program such as MS Excel, and the columns re-arranged (dragged) to match the Pegasus Mail order.  To get the Pegasus Mail order, use the following field names and lengths:

     Alias (40)              (* Fullname *)

    Company (40)        (* companyname *)

    Key (12)                (* unique search key   *)

Street (60)             (* first part of postal address *)

Post (56)              (* remainder of postal address *)

    Phone (24)           (* phone number *)

    Fax (24)              (* fax number *)

    Notes (79)          (* general notes *)

    Address (99)     (* Email address *)

Picture (8)           (* filename of an icon sized image, ie martin.bmp *)

Some comments that might help.

1. The Alias (fullname) in Pegasus Mail will typically match the "displayname" in other address books

2. The Key in Pegasus mail will typically be some combination of lastname + firstname. In my case Martin Ireland would possibly be irelandmar

3. Only the Alias and Address fields are mandatory.

Hope this can help, but I recommend going the VCard route, as these irritations are solved.

But it isn't named CSV in the addressbook menu, so which one is the proper one? I assume tab-delimited file?

This is because CSV was originally Comma Separated Values used by Visicalc. It became industry standard when an option was added to allow the delimiter between values, could be set to Tab, or any other unique character. This was because many character data streams could contain a comma ie   Ireland, Martin  as the fullname value.  I personally use the Tilde character as you can see the enclosing of a string, so my name would appear as ~Ireland, Martin~

To answer your question, Pegasus Mail does require tab-delimited fields. The export function of the originating application should offer a dialog for the user to choose the delimiter to be used.

Thanks a lot. What do the numbers in brackets represent?

"Field length" = maximum number of characters

I notice that the field length for image files is 8 characters. Will the next version of Pegasus Mail support long file names? Will it also support file sizes over 2GB?

The image is a thumbprint size, that fits in the square to the right of the address information, under the heading "Picture".  As to long filenames, I believe the answer is Yes, as the code for Pegasus Mail rolls out we will see how much legacy restrictions have been carried forward.  the 8 character name length is a pre-longfilename requirement that came from PC-DOS and into early Windows versions.
