Move installation to new computer

A clean install is a good choice.  There is a list of filenames and extensions that is a valuable for reference for identifying which files to copy from your old installation.  Find it at:  http://www.vandenbogaerde.net/pegasusmail/pf_pmfiles.html

Also, I have a document created for personal reference that I believe you would find helpful.  If you would like a copy, send me a private message with your email address.

The answer is "it depends".

A clean install on the Win7 machine and then copying data from the XP machine to the Win7 machine is the best way to go.

The other option is a machine to machine copy which is only possible under specific conditions.  In order for us to determine whether a copy is possible we need to

know more about your installation.  The easiest way to provide this is

to open Pegasus Mail then go to Help > About Pegasus Mail and click

the Info button.  You will see a list of configured parameters and

paths.  Copy the entire list and paste it into a reply to this post.

This tells me that Pegasus Mail is installed in the directory \Programme on drive D:.  Pegasus Mail installs to C:\PMAIL by default which is recommend.

I interpolate that "Programme" in German means "Program" in English but do not know if the Windows XP \Program Files directory is called \Programmes.  If it is then you MUST do a new install of Pegasus Mail on the Win7 machine.

If D:\Programme is not the operating system \Program Files directory and you plan on having a drive D: on the Win7 machine then you can use the entire contents of the \PMAIL directory from the XP machine which will bring over all configurations and data.  The drawback to this approach is that it will also bring over any problems which is why it is recommended to do a clean install and then bring over just the data.

If you wish to proceed with using the existing configuration from the XP machine, do a clean install of v4.63 of Pegasus Mail on the Win7 machine pointing it to D:\Programme\PMAIL (must install the same version that is on the XP machine).  Do minimal configuration during installation (skip the POP3 and SMTP server configurations).  Once the installer finishes, close Pegasus Mail then rename D:\Programme\PMAIL\MAIL to D:\Programme\PMAIL\MAIL_NEW.  Now copy the entire D:\Programme\PMAIL\MAIL directory from the XP machine to D:\Programme\PMAIL\MAIL on the Win7 machine.  Start Pegasus Mail and it should all be the same as it was on the XP machine.  Delete the MAIL_NEW directory once everything is working.

Post back if you choose to do a clean install and then move data for specific help on what files to move.

Finally, if you have done research you may have seen some posts that describe simply copying \PMAIL from one machine to another then creating a shortcut to winpm-32.exe.  This is possible (paths must be identical) but will leave you unable to set Pegasus Mail as the default mailer.  The installer creates the necessary registry entries for full functionality.

I opted for a clean new installation, because the new program will be in C:.  I like to use the address books and email folders of my old installation, as well as the spam settings.
