It sounds like the option is enabled that reports the message count but does not download them.  It is located on the General tab of the POP3 host configuration.

As far as the large message download problem, someone else recently reported what sounds like the same problem.  No solution has been posted though.  Here is the thread:  http://community.pmail.com/forums/thread/41487.aspx

I've been using Pegasus Mail since the mid-1980s. and rarely have problems.  Lately I've been having trouble retrieving emails with fairly large attachments (2 - 6 or more MB), so I tried changing my connection entry settings to leave larger emails on the server.  Not only did that fail to screen out any emails, now when I press "Check now" Pegasus connects to my POP3 server, briefly shows 17 emails on server, but then immediately disconnects.

I am using WinPMail version: Version 4.70 (Win32), Feb 27 2014, build ID 546 on a Windows XP computer.

I would greatly appreciate any help in solving this problem.

I would suggest undoing the "leaving large messages" setting, then simply use File/Menu Selective message downloads, to get a list of messages on the server, and select them and get them.
