If you are using v4.70 go to the Security tab of the SMTP host configuration. Toggle the setting "Only use SSLv3..." then test. This is a trial and error setting depending on the SSL being used by the SMTP server you are connecting to. I believe Verizon needs this setting disabled but am not sure that all Verizon servers do yet.
Also in the Security tab (at the bottom) is a setting about using CRAM-MD5 authentication. That setting needs to be enabled.
You might want to search the forum for Verizon. There are a number of discussions on the subject.
