4.70 re-install not retaining settings
Are you suggesting 4.70 cannot be installed in

E:\PMAIL? Because that is where I have been running 4.70 (via upgrades)

since 4.70 arrived. Drive 'C' on my machines is only used for the OS.

Other logical drives are for APPS, DATA, Downloads, Office, Utilities,

Photos, etc. This has been my practice whenever I build a new PC
Not at all. An installation to E:\PMAIL is perfectly fine.  What is important to understand is that if you want to move any mailbox directory from one machine to another it must be moved to the exact same path with the understanding that on a Win7 or newer OS it can not reside anywhere inside of \PROGRAM FILES.
At

the moment 4.70 is working OK in the directory E:\PMAIL except that it

cannot 'see' the saved mail folders that were copied back from the saved

location. PMAIL.INI has the correct paths to E:\PMAIL\MAIL.
There are other files that contain paths.  Also, there is a file named PMAIL.CFG located in the excutable directory that tells Pegasus Mail where to look for the mailbox directory(ies).  You can view its content with a text editor but it is one of the few files that you can not manually edit.  It gets modified using PCONFIG.EXE.
I have never previously had any problems of this nature when transferring PM (with data) to a new build PC.
It still can be problem free provided the conditions are as described above (exact same path and not in \PROGRAM FILES).  Here are the steps I suggest following if both the mailbox directories

and the executables are inside of E:\PMAIL and you wish to move them to

E:\PMAIL on a new machine.  1) Duplicate E:\PMAIL on the new machine;

2) Run winpm-32.exe once including specifying a user if needed (get it

fully started up with a mailbox opened);  3) Shut it down;  4) Run the

installer over top (upgrade) in order to create registry entries and

shortcuts.  It should now be ready to go.

Note 1: The purpose for

running winpm-32.exe once is that it creates registry entries that will

tell the installer the path to the last run winpm-32.exe and its

mailboxes.  You may remember the days when Pegasus Mail did not make

registry entries.  Those days are gone.

Note 2:  The copy of

Pegasus Mail on the new machine can work fine without running the

installer but some functionality will be lost (specifying it as default

mail program to the OS for example).
NOTE: The saved ADMIN files have not yet been copied over. The ADMIN folder contains only the new install files.
I am confused by this statement.  Your first statement says that the saved mail folders were copied back from the saved location.   If you did a new install then copied back other mailbox directories, the new install may have no knowledge that those other mailboxes (Pegasus Mail users) exist.  That information is stored in the \MAIL\PMAIL.USR file which you would also have needed to copy over provided your old installation contained an /ADMIN mailbox.  Even if you did, I am not sure this will work if the new install is a single user install.  You might need to convert it to multi-user.

System: Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

I re-installed Win 7 in an attempt to clear an audio driver problem. After that I re-installed PMail 4.70 - I should have clicked on winpm-32.exe and let it sort itself out.

Now I have the following problems:

Folders in Main Folder not displayed. They exist on the HDD. (Only 'New Mail', 'Deleted Messages', 'Junk Mail' and 'Recent Search Results' are listed in 'Folders').

Addresses in Address Book not displayed.

Page layout not remembered after exiting - the appropriate 'tick-box' is ticked.

Internet options not remembered after exiting - the POP3 and SMTP definition names are blank on re-loading PM (they still exist iin 'edit' but are not at the top of the box which is a blank line).

Cannot un-install PM - Windows cannot find WPMSETUP.LOG yet it exists in the 'Programs' folder.

Note: PMAIL is installed on a separate 'APPS' logical drive as are all my applictions. Drive 'C' is never used for applications.

I have been using PM since the early days last century and have had no problems of this nature from Win95 to Win 7. Every PM upgrade has installed seamlessly.

I am beginning to suspect a faulty Win 7 re-install.

Any suggestion would be most helpful.

TIA

Alan B

When Pegasus Mail installs it looks for a registry entry that contains the location of the last run instance of Pegasus Mail.  If it doesn't find one it assumes a new install but should have allowed you to specify where you wanted it installed as well as where it should find the mailbox directories.

The easiest way to determine the current installation status is to go to Help > About Pegasus Mail then click the Info button.  The resulting display will show both where Pegasus Mail is installed and where it is looking for the mailbox directories.  Feel free to copy and paste the contents of that display in a reply.  If you do that, also include the paths to both Pegasus Mail (winpm-32.exe) and the root mailbox directory that are on the logical drive.

Also, try executing the winpm-32.exe file that is located in the Pegasus Mail installation that is in APPS on the logical drive.  It may work as expected.  It is questionable whether MAILTO links and SENDTO functionality will work correctly because of the new install so figuring out what the new install did remains important.

Thank you Brian,

Things have changed here. I did a complete re-install of Win 7 followed by a clean install of PM 4.70. Prior to installing PM I saved all the mail folders and Admin to another directory.

PM now works fine as it should, but it doesn't 'see' the old folders and Address Book when I copy them back to the new install. How can I reinstitute these folders and Address Book?

Maybe there is something I need to change in PMAIL.INI?

TIA

Alan B

One thing that is important to understand is that most of the Pegasus Mail configuration files are stored in the mailbox directory(ies).  Many of these configuration files contain paths.  If the new installation is not in the exact same path as the previous one then these files create conflicts in the new install.  If you copied the whole /Admin mailbox directory over the one from the new install then you may have these conflicts.  The ideal process is to do a new install and then copy just data to the new mailbox directory(ies).  There is a downloadable whitepaper on this at:  http://community.pmail.com/files/folders/whitepapers/entry41695.aspx

Another excellent reference source is Hans' Guide to Filenames and Extensions at: http://www.vandenbogaerde.net/pegasusmail/pf_pmfiles.html

Note that neither of these files have been updated for v4.7 so you will see some files in a v4.7 install that are not referenced on these documents.  From what I know they are associated with the new spell checker dictionaries and should not affect what you are trying to do.

In your case, the best approach might be an uninstall/reinstall and then copy the data rather than trying to figure out what is broken in your current install.

Thanks. Downloaded OK.

I thought I would start afresh by installing 4.70 to an empty folder and then later copy saved data over.

PM keeps asking me for a 'User Name' to access the mailbox. I've tried all combinations that exist in PMAIL.INI and elsewhere on the system that I have used to no avail. I keep getting the message:

"The user you are attempting to 'become' () does not exist on this system." Is there a default 'User Name' I could use?

I've tried uninstalling and installing 4.41 and 4.63 in turn with the same result.

If this cannot be resolved my next step will be to completely wipe the system (drive C:) (keeping the saved data on another drive) and re-load Win 7 from scratch and start as though a new PC.

I really don't want to do this.

In a new install the default user "Admin".  It knows nothing of any Pegasus Mail users from any other instance of

Pegasus Mail.  You must configure the user(s) in the new

installation and then copy data from the old mailbox(es). The fact that it is prompting you for a user indicates that it can not access the \MAIL directory.

Note:  Pegasus Mail can not be installed anywhere inside of a \Program

Files directory on a Win7 or Win8 OS.  It can not function correctly due

to the file protections MS incorporated into these OSes.  The recommended install path is the default path of C:\PMAIL.

Hi, Brian,

Are you suggesting that 4.70 cannot be installed in E:\PMAIL? Because that is where I have been running 4.70 for the last two years (via upgrade).

At the moment 4.70 (new install) is running OK in the above location but it cannot 'see' the mail folders  that have been copied into E:\PMAIL\MAIL from the 'saved' directory. PMAIL.INI has all the correct paths to point to the MAIL folder.

In all the years I have been building PCs and using Pegasus I have never experienced this trouble in transferring PM to a new machine with all the data.

Note: The ADMIN folder has only the files from the fresh install. The saved ADMIN files have not been transferred - yet.

 Alan B

Hi, Brian,

Are you suggesting 4.70 cannot be installed in E:\PMAIL? Because that is where I have been running 4.70 (via upgrades) since 4.70 arrived. Drive 'C' on my machines is only used for the OS. Other logical drives are for APPS, DATA, Downloads, Office, Utilities, Photos, etc. This has been my practice whenever I build a new PC

At the moment 4.70 is working OK in the directory E:\PMAIL except that it cannot 'see' the saved mail folders that were copied back from the saved location. PMAIL.INI has the correct paths to E:\PMAIL\MAIL.

I have never previously had any problems of this nature when transferring PM (with data) to a new build PC.

NOTE: The saved ADMIN files have not yet been copied over. The ADMIN folder contains only the new install files.
