Mailbox won't open

Brian,

Many thanks for your advice. Your third suggestion did the trick. There was a rogue (very large) .CNM causing the freeze.

I'm using Pmail 4.7 under Windows-XP.

When I try to start Pegasus with one particular user, I get the message that the mailbox is locked.  I know no one else is in that particular mailbox, so I select "Continue".  It tries to open, but hangs up with the message "Opening new mail folder..." at the bottom.  Any help would be appreciated.

When Pegasus Mail fails to shutdown successfully it leaves a lock file in place (MAILBOXP.LCK).  The "Continue" option bypasses the mailbox locked warning and the lock file will be released once Pegasus Mail has a successful shutdown.  As for getting Pegasus Mail started.

  • Try restarting the PC.
  • Any changes to printers?  Pegasus Mail polls the default printer and will hang on startup if it can not find one.
  • Lastly, a bad new mail file can cause a hang when Pegasus Mail is trying to display new messages.  To address this, look for a zero byte .cnm file and delete it.  If there is not one, move all .cnm files out of the mailbox directory then start Pegasus Mail.  If it starts then you know you have a bad new mail messages.  There is no easy way to identify the one that is bad.  It will be date/time stamped newer than the last time Pegasus Mail started up but other than that the only way to find it is by trial and error.  You move a few at a time back into the mailbox directory start Pegasus Mail until it hangs.  You then narrow it down from within that batch.

Thank you very much for your answer.  Your third item corrected the problem.  There was a large (43,000 KB) .cnm file that was causing the freeze.
