Pegasus 4.7 crashing regually

Thank you Michael

I have turned that option off and while still not fast the message display is certainly quicker and I haven't had any problems with Pegasus hanging on start up since. I presume now that the problems I've been having are due to having an older computer and a not very fast internet connection.

Hi

I have been having an issue with Pegasus that is getting worse.

I'm running Pegasus 4.70 on Windows XP.

Pegasus is very very slow to open and frequently hangs with the screen whited out. This now happens at least once a day. The only way I can start it is to move one or more of the latest CNM files out of my mail folder.

If anyone has any ideas as to why this is happening I would very much appreciate it.

 Thanks

Richard

Your thread subject uses the term "crashing" however your description sounds like a hang rather than a hard crash.  Please clarify whether you are experiencing a hard crash (closes unexpectedly) or a hang (requires you to kill the process via task manager).

How many messages are in your new mail folder?

Are you doing new mail filtering?

Have you identified specific .CNM files that are causing the problem,

and if so, have you analyzed them for any commonality on which you could

filter?

Please describe what Pegasus Mail was doing when the hang/crash occurred.  FYI, v4.70 can appear to hang when it is retrieving mail or doing some other function (eg: folder open or close filtering, folder reindexing, moving lots of messages).  The apparent hangs can reach the point where the system adds the "not responsive" verbiage to the window title.  I these cases it is not actually hung, it is just busy.  My experience is that on slower machines this delay can be significant whereas on my fastest machine it is a few second interruption.

This might be caused by your WinSock settings, for a cure see this post.

Hi

Thankyou for the replies. I think  hung rather than crashed would be a better way of describing it. However Pegasus stays in this mode for several minuits and if I stop the programme with the Task Manager it tells me Pegasus is not responding.. My computer is an older machineprobably obvious as I still am using XP. These hangs occur when I'm opening the programme especilly if I try to open another programme at the same time.

I have Pegasus set to automatically move read messages to the Main folder so there are usually only a handful in the New folder.

Yes I do  filter a few mail senders into seperate folders.

It is always the latest CNM files that are the problem.  I don't know how to analyze them however to look for any commonality. I have moved them to a seperate folder within the Pmail folder which now contains some 40 files.

The Load Windows Internet Services is set to Always.

Thanks

Richard

The .cnm files are plain text files viewable with a text editor like Notepad but you need to identify the specific .cnm files that are causing the hangs then look for commonality within them.  This can be a challenge because the only way to do it is to manually move a few of the .cnm files back into the mailbox directory then start Pegasus Mail to test that batch.  When the startup hangs you know that batch contained a bad file so you must then move those back out of the mailbox directory then move them back in one at a time testing after each one until you identify a problem file (tedious, I know).  Move it to its own directory then continue with batches.  Obviously you need to either keep track of the filenames in each batch or empty the new mail folder after each successful test.  The goal is to have all of the bad messages in one directory.  You can then use a text editor to look at their content to see if you can identify something to filter on (like some common header content) so as to keep them out of the new mail folder.  This is assuming they are spam.  If they are valid messages please reply as such because some of the beta testers may want to obtain the files for further testing.

Two more possible issues: Could it be due to a filter rule? Do you have auto-download for remote images in HTML messages enabled?

Thank you for the help Brian. I have done as you suggested. I moved the CNM files back to my mail folder one by one starting Pegasus each time to test for trouble. All the smaller sized files were fine. I am left with 11 troublesome CNM files ranging from 129 KB to 668 KB plus 2 huge files that had large attachments. Of the 11 files 6 are from one sender. I will be taking myself off their mailing list.

I wouldn't describe any of them as unsolicited spam though all bar one are from organisations that have me on their mailing lists.

Please let me know if any beta testers want to test any of these files.

Regards

Richard

Hi Michael

Yes I do have  auto download for remote images in HTML messages enabled..

Should I turn this option off.

Thanks

Richard

This would definitely speed up message display. If you still need to see remote images for certain messages you can add the respective sender addresses to the exception list on Tools => Options => Message reader. You may also download images manually via the respective context menu option if you don't want to define a permanent exception.
