local email addresses and IMAP

The protocol IMAP has no feature translating mailaddresses! It's something like a filesystem for your mailbox.

To solve that problem, you have to avoid users from using Netware usernames for addressing. There is no other way to solve it.

The way I've gone years ago is to install a SMTP-Configuration for my Pegasus users. If in place, two things happen. The module SMTPS in Mercury shows up on such a mail:

Connection from 129.217.xxx.xxx, Tue Jul 21 07:39:10 2015
EHLO xxx.xxx.tu-dortmund.de
STARTTLS
EHLO xxx.xxx.tu-dortmund.de
MAIL FROM:<xxx.xxx@xxx.tu-dortmund.de> SIZE=1840
RCPT TO:<netwareuser>
QUIT

Seems normal, but SMTPS denies receipt (the protocol entry DATA is missing, which indicates SMTPS to accept the mail) and Pegasus produces an internal errormessage including the line:

553 Invalid RFC821 mailbox specification.

So your local users can't send with netware usernames any more.

We use Pegasus and Mercury/32 in a Novell environment. Works great.

Internally, we can send email without including the domain and Pegasus delivers directly without going through Mercury.  We like that.  Works great.

A few users have smart phones and use IMAP to access their email when out of the office. Works great...until they try to reply to an internal email. The internal email sender and reply-to addresses do not have a domain so the IMAP client doesn't recognize the email address as valid.

Is there a way to make the Mercury IMAP server alter the sender or reply-to address to include the domain when it's not there?

Hi,

IMAP is simply a mailbox hosting protocol. In answering your Smartphone users use SMTP - the sending protocol.

I'm not shure but as I remember there is a rewrite-section for Netware user names using SMTP. Read help - carefully!

Never used it and disabled local delivery when Internet was coming up more and more. I did that step vor about 20 years ago.

We have the same problem with IMAP users (smartphones and iPads).  I am trying to get users to stop using the local username as a To: address but it is proving to be a tough habit to break.

Sorry - found the help entry and "rewrite" won't do it. It only changes the address in the envelope, but not in mailheaders. Forgot that ...

So the only way is to install a SMTP-Configuration to every user, perhaps aligned with a central addressbook with complete Mailadresses and than remove the right CREATE from everyones "New Mail directory". Using local addresses Pegasus delivers mails directly to that directory by creating the CNM mailfile in the directory of the recipient. I don't know, what exactly happens (errormerssages) - so have a test with a testuser.

Thanks for trying, but changing anything on the SMTP server will not help because the IMAP mail clients don't send the email when the address does not include a domain.

To make this work, there would have to be a way to get the IMAP server to "translate" the local addresses when serving the messages to the IMAP client.

 Regards,

Tony
