use IMAP like POP3

Wow! Thanks a lot. My mistake: I have to get used to IMAP.

Apparently I looked at the mails in Thunderbird and assumed that Thunderbird would mark them as read just privately. But instead it seems they were marked as read on the server. Pegasus honours the flag and downloads unread messages as unread and read messages as read.

Hi,

if there is already a thread concerning this issue, I apologize. I didn't find any.

One (university) mailserver discontinues the POP3 protocol. Is there a way to autmatically download all new mail from the INBOX of the IMAP mailserver to the "New mail" folder of Pegasus?

In the Settings tab of the IMAP profile configuration is an option to "Make this definition's INBOX folder the default new mail folder".  Might that work for you?

It might. But my understanding is that this option does the opposite of what I want to achieve - haven't tried it, though.

I want to keep the new mail folder local and download (and delete on server) all mail while this option seems to put the new mail folder on the server.

Unfortunately, IMAP does not work like POP3.  The only way I know of to accomplish this is to move the messages from the IMAP Inbox to the New Mail Folder.  This can be semi-automated with filtering by creating a general rule set that always moves messages to the New Mail Folder and then attaching it as a folder-open filter set.  It requires that the Inbox folder be opened in order to trigger the filter though.

I suspect you are going to find it easiest to learn to live in IMAP land.  If you want copies stored locally you can create a filter as per the above that copies rather than moves.  A manual selective copy may be a better way to go if you don't need all messages stored locally.

You can do this by creating a dummy local account (mine was called Local - not very creative sort of person), do not set a SMTP definition associated with it.

Create folder sturctures as you wish.

Use General Rules to move or copy the  IMAP mail messages to your local machine. Must be run manually, use either whole folder or selected messages.

This of course defeats the benefit of IMAP storage...

Anther way is of course install Mercury setup to pull from the IMAP account.

YMMV

Thanks for the helpful comments. I prefer not to keep my mail online. Of those handful of mailservers only one stopped to support POP3 - so far.

I set up a rule to download all mail from this server to Pegasus' new mail folder. Starting this rule manually is a bit of a nuisance but ok.

Unfortunately in the process all mail becomes marked as "read". Is there a way to prevent that?

I just ran a quick test accessing my office mailbox via IMAP (mailserver is Mercury).  I sent some test messages then created a filter that would detect those message and move them to my New mail folder.  I attached the message as an on-open filter and tested.  The messages were moved but they did not get marked as read.  Could something be occurring on the server that is marking the messages as read?  Read messages will stay marked as read when moved to the New mail folder.
