Just switched broadband supplier - can receive but can't send emails
Problem solved by clever fellow at ZEN. Various addresses needed changing following my broadband switch.  Thanks.
Glad you got it sorted.  I've used Zen for many years and found their support to be very good.

I've just switched broadband supplier from Zen Internet to BT and get the following message when I try to send emails from Pegasus:

"This is not an open relay. To send through this server you must either be on a Zen Internet IP address or be authenticated over TLS."

Any suggestions (in layman's terms if possible!) as to how to overcome this would be gratefully received. And what is TLS?

In the Security tab of your Receiving (POP3) and Sending(SMTP) host configurations is where you configure TLS. These can be found at Tools > Internet Options.

In the Sending(SMTP) host configuration is a setting called "Via STARTTLS".  You need to select that then down in the the bottom section you select the "Login to the SMTP server with the following details" option then enter your access credentials.

If you are downloading via POP3 and are having problems receiving then in the Receiving(POP3) host configuration you enter your credentials in

the General tab (change the port if needed to match what BT specifies)

then in the Security tab select "Via STLS command".

Hi Brian

Many thanks for that.  Took me a while to find the right id and password but now all seems to be working.

Hi Brian

All was going fine until today.  All of a sudden I can't send emails again with the following gobbledegook message:

19:35:32.203: >> 535 Incorrect authentication data

I've changed nothing in Pegasus but have spent a lot of time and effort trying to sort out with BT why my Broadband keeps dropping.  Unsuccessful so far!  Any help again much appreciated.

Regards

Chris

You just publicly posted your username and password so I suggest you change them immediately (the content following the Auth Login line contains encoded user and password that is easily decoded).

Unfortunately I can't help you with your broadband reliability but see random connection failures to my providers on a regular basis that usually sort themselves out, often times within minutes.

The original message you quoted appears to be from Zen rather than BT.

Firstly what server settings have you been given by BT and secondly have you tried SSL instead of TLS in your Security settings?

Also keep in mind that if you use multiple identities you must configure the SMTP and POP3 hosts appropriately in each identity.

Hi

BT just provide my broadband.  Zen still host my website and provide my emails. I'm still waiting to hear from Zen just in case they have changed something as a result of me switching from their broadband.  Re SSL and TLS, I've tried most combinations of settings on a hit and hope basis - but I don't understand what I'm doing!!  (I learnt about computers in the days of IBM System/360!)
