Win 7 Mailbox Problem

Luckily NTFS sharing seems to have take care of itself in

this case and I haven’t had to do anything in folder/properties/security. All

the boxes were ticked when I looked there. At the moment my desktop is the only

Win7 machine in the house, with my wife’s desktop and two laptops still using

XP. So far I seem to have been able to avoid Homegroup and get the original XP

workgroup to work. Long may it last!

Very

many thanks to you both again.

I’m afraid that this may be a Win 7 problem as much as one

to do with Pegasus.

I have just set up a new(ish) Win 7 desktop with Pegasus

Mail 4.7 running well.

Previously, when I was using my old XP desktop, I was able

to run Pegasus on my laptop also using the mailbox on the desktop.

My problem is getting PMail 4.7 newly installed on the

laptop to work in the same way. Although I have a Network Places link that

finds the mailbox on the desktop from the laptop (\\ELON\ADMIN)

without any problem, whatever I do, PMail

seems unable to find it.

I’ve tried using pcconfig.exe to provide the new address,

and although this changes PMAIL.CFG to the correct address, when I start PMail all

I get it the splash screen for a moment and then nothing.

Any

suggestions would be very much appreciated.<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> </p><p> <w:WordDocument> </p><p> <w:View>Normal</w:View> </p><p> <w:Zoom>0</w:Zoom> </p><p> <w:DoNotOptimizeForBrowser/> </p><p> </w:WordDocument> </p><p></xml><![endif]-->

The behaviour of seeing the splash screen then nothing is indeed an indication that Pegasus Mail can not find the mailbox.  The share you set up on the desktop machine should be the root mailbox

directory (default C:\PMAIL\MAIL) and not to the mailbox directory itself.  So if you set up the share named MAIL at C:\PMAIL\MAIL on the \\ELON machine then the path in the PMAIL.CFG should look like \\ELON\MAIL\~8 (or ~N).   Note that the ~8 and ~N are substitutions for the Pegasus Mail username (~8 for usernames up to 8 characters, ~N for long usernames).  Also confirm that you can navigate to this path from the Win7 machine and can open a mailbox directory and its files (try opening a new message file (.CNM) with a text editor).

Also be aware that Pegasus Mail will not work if installed anywhere inside of a Program Files directory on Win7.

Many thanks for that Brian and I've now set the link to \\ELON\MAIL which has duly changed PMAIL.CFG to \\ELON\MAIL (twice). However there is no \~8 (or \~N) following this and I still get the same problem when I start the program. Looking in PMAIL.INI in the mailbox I see that my Internal username is set to Admin, so can I just edit PMAIL.CFG to include \~8?

If I open the mailbox from Explorer using the link \\ELON\MAIL I can then click through to ADMIN and open *.CMN files in Notepsd without any problem BUT ... the initial link to MAIL is very slow, taking several seconds  to load. Is it possible that Pegasus is timing out? And if so can I set a longer timeout in Pegasus?

So you have a desktop that hosts your mail account data and you are accessing it from a laptop?

Are you running Pegasus Mail from the desktop PC or from the laptop?

Either way, make a backup of your mail data and then delete the pmail.cfg file. Next, start Pegasus Mail and it will ask you which type of installation you have (single or multi-user), and where the mailboxes are located. If you are running winpm-32.exe from the Desktop PC (i.e. across the network) you must make sure you use UNC paths to point to the location of the mail account data and not use local paths.

UNC path = \\ELON\MAIL
Local path = C:\Mail

If you are running it from the laptop you need to ensure you use UNC paths as Brian has suggested.

Thanks Greenman, the mailbox is on the desktop and I am

trying to re-establish a setup that allows me to access it from my laptop too.

I’ve tried what you recommend several times, but the laptop

still can’t find the mailbox on the desktop using the UNC address. I’ve checked

repeatedly that this is accessible from the laptop by typing \\ELON\MAIL into

Explorer. Permissions on the Desktop (Win 7) don’t seem to be the problem then.

So I have now done the following:

Used Control Panel to uninstall

Pegasus 4.7 (and the HTML renderer) on the laptop, and deleted the remaining

files at C:\PMAIL too. I notice that this still leaves entries in Registry

which point to a mailbox at C:\PMAIL\MAIL rather than \\ELON\MAIL, but I

haven’t altered these.

I’ve reinstalled Pegasus on the

laptop using Ver 4.63, which was working OK before I installed Ver 4.7 and

changed to a new desktop with WIN 7 instead of XP.

During the installation procedure

I have unchecked ‘Preconfigure a mailbox’ and taken the third option (using on

network as part of a workgroup) when prompted for a mailbox location and

entered \\ELON\MAIL as the UNC address.

When asked if I want to add an

additional user I’ve clicked Close, leaving a single entry for Admin in the

dialog box, and the program then terminates.

When re-starting the program for the first time after this I

did  get prompted for a username,

entered Admin, and got a message that that name does not exist. Now when I

start Pegasus I’m back to just getting the splash screen for a moment and then

nothing.

What path is showing in PMAIL.CFG now?  I'm curious whether it contains the ~8 or ~N substitution characters.

Also, please provide the content of the Info button located in Help > About Pegasus Mail.

Finally, try running the desktop install of Pegasus Mail from the laptop and see what happens.  Sharing the desktop install would be the simplest way to go based on what you appear to be trying to accomplish (no mailbox needed on the laptop).  Obviously you will need to create a share at the \PMAIL directory.

OK.

You need to ensure that the permissions of the account you are using to access the remote share actually have Full Control permission. It sounds as though you are only person using these computers so enable the Guest account and give the Guest account full control over the top level folder that hosts your mail data.

For example, if your data is located within the Admin folder off Mail (C:\Mail\Admin) right-click the Mail folder and ensure that the Guest account has Full Control under the Sharing permissions and the Security permissions. Click OK when done to ensure that the permissions propagate throughout the Mail and Admin folders then delete pmail.cfg and run Pegasus Mail again and point it at the Mail folder (remember to use a UNC path). When you do, you should see your Admin account listed.

Follow Brian's request too so we can see what the path is in the cfg before you delete it.

Let us know how you get on.

OK!

Greenman mentioned Full Control permission for Guest. (What

the hell’s that? I’m new to Win 7 and I don’t remember any such thing in XP

where I just kind of shared things) So I spent last night with Windows 7

Unleashed, which was enlightening.

This morning I obliterated all the shares that I’d

established using the Win 7 equivalent of simple file sharing. These were for

Everyone, Read and Write. I then, as the book suggests, set them up for Guest

using the Sharing Wizard. From there I used Advanced Sharing in folder

Properties to set Full Control.

Pegasus now works fine from the laptop, and without a Mail

folder on that machine, just like old times.

The only thing that puzzles me now is that the Full Control

permission set for Mail did not cascade down to Admin, which I had to set to

Full Control too. Back to WIndows 7 Unleashed this evening I suppose, but there are moments when Win 7 makes me want to chew the

carpet.

Very many thanks to Brian and Greenman for your help, which

got me there in the end, even though it was not a Pegasus problem, and I apologise

for posting a query which wouldn’t have been necessary if I’d done my homework

properly.

I’ve

only described how I set the permissions above in case someone else with the

same problem (and level of ignorance of Win 7) stumbles on the thread. Brian and

Greenman would obviously know all this very well.

Yeah. Permissions can make your head hurt :)

I manage the IT for a company so am familiar with them and thought your issue may be a permissions problem.

As you've learnt, the Sharing Wizard does not work as expected. It is always best to use the advanced sharing option. When you set permissions they usually filter down through the sub folders. However, it is possible (and often desirable) to prevent this from happening so that you can set specific permissions on sub folders (though this usually applies to business environments) and I suspect this is what had happened with your Mail folder. If the account you were using did not have full control permission (read, write, delete, modify etc), for the Admin folder then Pegasus Mail would not be able to read it.

Anyway, really pleased you got it working :)

Win7 can be very frustrating.  Not only do you have to establish the share and its associated permissions but you also have to set NTFS permissions (via the Security tab).  On top of that MS "tried" to make it easy with "Homegroup" but that is problematic when networking Win7 to an older OS.  I ended up disabling Homegroup on my Win7 laptop in order for it to see shares my XP desktop.  Additionally, MS made the term "share" more obtuse by using it to refer both to networking shares and user shares (between users on the same PC).
