Apply filtering rules when previewing folders does not work as described

[quote user="arnaudherve"]

And how on earth is the average user supposed to know he must do all that in Tools | Options... ?

Everybody assumes that read mail will stay in New Mail folder, until it is the explicit wish of the user to do something else with them. Either by a mouse decision, or by an added rule of which the user is conscious.

And why do they assume that?  Each program does something differently.  When using Word and WordPerfect does one always assume both work the same?  MSIE and Firefox?  To ass-u-me anything most of the time is wrong. [:)]

the help-file states:

 Apply filtering rules when

previewing folders  If this control is checked, Pegasus Mail will

apply any filtering rules associated with a folder whenever the folder

is previewed in the folder manager window. If this control is not

checked, then filtering rules will only be applied to a folder when it

is opened in its own separate window by clicking the Open button.

I have setup a filtering rule for my spam-folder in that way that all messages should be deleted that are older than 60 days.

although

I have MARKED the option "Apply filtering rules when previewing

folders" under tools/options/incoming mail/preview mode settings AND

have attributed the spam-folder with the deletion-rule, automatic

deletion ONLY works if the spam-folder is opened in its own separate

window by clicking the open button.

 what am I doing wrong?

problem "solved", works now after a restart of pmail.

I have exactly the same problem. Filtering on closing new mail folder does not work in preview mode. Any suggestions?

Moving to a different folder in the preview mode is not the same as closing the folder, you need to open and close the folder for the close filter to work.  Think about it, you really would not want folder close filters to trigger when just moving from folder to folder.

But something quite similar happens: Read messages are moved from new mail folder to read messages when moving to another folder in preview mode. As a result, messages are neither in their original place (new mal folder) nor in the expected place (filter destination) but in another (read mail folder). That is a little bit confusing.

As a workaround I unchecked "mark displayed messages as read in preview mode" (or whatever it is in English, I am using the German version). At least this prevents messages to be moved to the wrong folder.

The new mail folder is special since it's really nothing more than a listing of CNM files in the new mail directory.  Generally you will really want to move the read mail out of this folder to the default folder when moving away.

You can also check Tools | Options | Basic settings "Allow read messages to stay in the new mail folder"
