Pegasus Mail Suggestions
Using Google Contacts in Pegasus

I think it unlikely that there will be an automated sync with Google Contacts any time soon.  I checked out the extension mentioned in the above thread, and it is made up from 76 source modules for the English version. The code is complex and proprietary, so conversion is unlikely. Secondly the current Pegasus Mail address book is a subset of the full vCard definitions, so conversion requires selective copying of vCard data into fields with non-standard names. Also the Google API is complex and coded in a mixture of languages.

There is a possibility that the coming Pegasus Mail V5, which will use databases, may be able to support a fuller implementation of vCards. In the meantime, the manual export of Google Contacts into vCards is a simple and straight-forward process for infrequent sync'ing with Pegasus Mail, using the PMVcard extension.

Hope that clarifies the situation a bit.

Hi,

Can I either request a new feature for consideration in future releases or possible an extension: would it be possible to use my Google Contacts (from https://www.google.com/contacts or my Android phone) as an address book in PMail?

Thanks,

Raj.

Yes you can use Google Contacts entries in Pegasus Mail. In Google Mail, select Contacts, and then select Export. This will create a file Contacts.vcf in your file system (SDCARD). You can then email this file to your Pegasus Mail system. In Pegasus Mail you can use PMVCARD to import the entries. This program is available at the download location http://community.pmail.com/files/folders/pegadd/entry44115.aspx

You should read the issues section of the Readme.txt to understand which data fields have no equivalents. The name and email addresses will always work.

Let me know if you have any problems

Just to let you know I have exported my Google Contacts without problem, and emailed them to myself. That was the good news. Bad news is that Google like other vendors have their own interpretation of the VCARD RFC definitions.  It does not look too difficult to fix this, so I will let you know when I upload the fixed version of PMVCARD

Apologies, I only just noticed that there was a reply to this thread.  I really meant something that would be live, hooked into Google Contacts, rather than manually exporting.  That way, I only need to maintain a single address book, and don't need to keep synchronising (something like the GContactSync extension for Thunderbird/SeaMonkey).
