I have used Pegasus Mail for many years, and have suddenly developed a new problem. I am using a Dell Inspiron laptop.I use a local ISP solely for emails. After login to their secure email server, I check my mail having set up my network configuration according to instructions Re; ports, etc. from the ISP. About a week ago, (perhaps coincidentally after downloading a free You tube downloader (4K Video downloader) i began experiencing problems Receiving (POP3 using SSL connect) emails from the host server. I am logged in OK, but, after apparently reading 1 or 2 messages I get an error message ("unexpected network error occurred during the transaction"). The Techie at the ISP who looked at the error message tells me that there is nothing wrong on  their end. I spoke with tech support at Hughesnet (satellite internet provider) and he says that, aside from heavy usage of their hardware, the system is working OK. I tried early morning (4:00 am) logins in hopes to find a time when usage might be lower, but the outcome was the same. Any ideas? I can send emails (SMTP) fine.

To help determine the problem, try using the selective down function on File menu. It will provide you with a list of messages waiting to be downloaded. Then just select one message at a time and click the download button. If it downloads, move on to the next message.  Repeat until you have seen enough.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it proved impossible to actually download one at a time. Something has changed apparently, as my  ISP server no longer gives me an error message, and Pegasus appears to be downloading all messages. However,  they do  not show up in my Pegasus inbox. I  asked the ISP if I could login NOT using SSL and they said fine. However, this did nothing to fix/change the problem at all

Just to avoid misunderstandings, downloaded messages arrive in New Mail Folder (NMF) which happens to be the user's mailbox directory. It is not a Pegasus Mail folder like Inbox or Outbox. I'm assuming OP is referring NMF.

That said, all downloaded messages go to NMF but may be filtered either by Incoming New Mail rules, Autofiltering, Content Control or SpamHalter action. Rule action can be tracked by the System Messages... If after these measures it still fails I'd look into POP settings. Maybe Pmail could be only polling server's messages or deleting and not downloading (POP3 filtering rules) messages.

And with the risk to sound repetitive, Session Logs {Tools > Internet options... > General > Create Internet session logs (advanced diagnostic use only)} are always helpful. Maybe it could be made a sticky post of the Pegasus Mail Community Support.

Greetings

Thank you for your efforts to help.Although I have used computers during my University career (now retired), I am neither a programmer nor a sophisticated computer expert. I do not for example understand where I would find the New Mail Folder (NMF) you refer to or where to find my mailbox directory on my 5 yr old dell Inspiron 15 3000 series PC running WINDOWS 10. Your help would be appreciated understanding how I find my NMF. I have addressed my POP3 settings and they are as the ISP suggests either using SSL or not using it. The POP3 filtering rules are solely to avoid downloading spam messages. The most frustrating thing is that I had changed nothing from one day to the next and the problem just cropped up  out of nowhere. By the way, I use the Avast virus protection and run maintenance on the  PC very often so I don't believe malware or viiruses is my problem.

Best regards, Bill

Hi Bill,

Despite I'm quite an old Pegasus Mail user (but not old enough), I'm far to be a knowledgeable user. This tool full potential is yet to be discovered but I think I can answer your question.

The best way to know where things are is evoking the About dialog box. Go to Help > About Pegasus Mail... so it pop's out something like mine below.

About Pegasus Mail

Click the Info... button to call information about your current Pegasus Mail environment as a scrollable list box. The view below is a stretched view of mine.

Pegasus Mail info

As you can see is a lot of information. Now your questions:

The New Mail Folder (NMF) is not a Pegasus Mail normal folder which is formed by a container file (e.g. FOL01D1D.PMM) and an index file (e.g. FOL01D1D.PMI). These files are seen as a folder listed in your Folders pane (or the left treeview box in the Preview mode) by a more meaningful name, say Suspicious or junk mail. These files are saved in the mailbox directory (e.g. C:\PMAIL\MAIL\german).

So, I said what NMF is not but what it is? Well, it is the mailbox directory itself. The only difference is that Pegasus Mail takes care to list ONLY files with the CNM extension, and that listing is what you see in the Preview mode three-pane or in the New Mail windows in the Classic multi-window mode. It is good practice to not keep a large number of CNM files in the mailbox, and to archive them into the folders. To each one its own. And if you don't remember where you filed a message all those folders are fully searchable.

Now a word about your antivirus. Pegasus Mail needs full access to its files, messages (filename.CNM) included. The problem with antivirus is that while scanning files that were written or modified these files are locked which may lead Pegasus Mail to hang, choke or simply fail to function. Martin Ireland wrote a nice tool to cope antivirus (many of them) with Pegasus Mail. It is called Virscan and will work nicely with Avast. You should instruct Avast to not scan (active protection) \PMAIL and its sub-directories. Virscan will take care to invoke Avast's command line scanner (ashquick.exe) to inspect every attachment, embedded graphics, etc. so no malware comes to you via email. I use it since forever.

Hope it helps. Feel free to address more questions to the Community. I don't know of any other so willing to help as this one, and that is from a looong time now.

In a nutshell, the New Mail Folder is often referred to as the 'inbox' but when its window is open it has the title of "New mail folder".  It is listed in the Pegasus Mail folder list as "New mail".   As Euler explained, the only reason downloaded messages won't appear in the new mail folder is if they are diverted by a filter.  To confirm message are being downloaded, open the System Messages window which can be accessed using the Window pull-down menu.  It contains a brief log of activity that includes POP3 entries that show number of messages downloaded and entries that show messages moved by a processing rule (eg: new mail filter).  See if you see anything there that gives you any clues into what is going on.  You can leave that window open to watch activity.

One other thought...

New messages stop automatically appearing in the new mail list once the new mail message counts gets somewhere above 700.  The messages are being delivered to the mailbox, they just don't appear in the list until it is refreshed (closed/opened).

Thanks for the ideas Brian. After doing what you suggested (open system messages window) I noted the following message: "WARNING Spamhalter not found folder for SPAM". Also noted that zero messages had downloaded (the problem I've been asking for help about). In response, I activated spamhalter thinking that this might fix the problem, but it did not. When I tried checking mail, after this, Pegasus behaved normally, and it showed that 1 message had been download, however, it was nowhere to be found in the new mail folder. So it appearsI am still at square 1.

Check your spam folder. It is most likely there. If so, move it to NMF to train SpamHalter.

I looked into this but have no messages in any Pegasus folder since the problem started in late April. Also there are no messages in the separate spam folder for my ISP account. The messages remain on the ISP webmail, but never apparently get to Pegasus on my PC.

Question: when I received spam on my PC prior to end of April, I have added them to my Pegasus filtering rules. Thus, I have a lot of rules in Pegasus Mails. The spam shows up if I check email from my iphone/ipad, but by  the time the messages are (were) downloaded to my PC and deleted from the ISP server, any spam that isn't picked up by  my ISP spam filter automatically goes into my Pegasus "junk" mail folder.  Do you think that deleting many of the older rules at least might help?

I hate to, but I'm close to giving up on Pegasus. The problem is that I have a lot of mail that I want/need to keep that I will lose if I uninstall PMail.  I wonder if  there is any way I can keep all the data in my various folders, uninstall and then re-install Pegasus.

Some of your rules may have something to say. If you will, repeat the message download operation and check System Messages (Window > System Messages...) and you may see to where they were sent, probably deleted.

Absolutely yes! As a matter of fact I think you should get rid of your spam rules in favor of SpamHalter alone. It may take some time to train it but you'll notice it is much easier to maintain. My suggestion is to create two Quick Actions (Folders > Quick open... > Define quick actions...). I have one set to move selected messages INTO spam folder and another to move selected messages OUT from the spam folder and into New Mail folder (NMF). This is all you need to train and maintain SpamHalter. Works like a charm...

Well, nothing to say here unless that I never found a mail client that could minimally replace it. YMMV.

Euler, I can't thank you enough for the time you've spent trying to help me figure this out. Apparently, the size of my rule set had something to do with the issue. I decided to try eliminating half of the rules and I was able to receive messages at last. After this, I deleted all the rest, and I will henceforth rely on Spamhalter alone). So far at least, everything appears to be working as before. The tip about looking at the System Messages was very valuable.

My very best regards to you.

Bill
