IMAP like POP?

My new provider dont't supply POP, only IMAP.

I want to use some facilities that I know about POP:

  • downloading new mail into my computer, so that I can work off-line;
  • downloading only unread mail;
  • selective (what I set-up) downloading;
  • downloaded mails remain on the server.

I suppose this is difficult under IMAP, but is it possible with PMail, perhaps with special adjustments?

IMAP is very different from POP3. IMAP accesses mail on a server. It does not download it. POP3 downloads mail from a server, optionally leaving it there if instructed to.

With IMAP, to store messages on your computer you must copy the message from a Pegasus Mail IMAP folder to a Pegasus Mail local folder (one that is inside of "My mailbox" in the folder list).

With IMAP, you can not download only unread mail nor is there any such thing as selective downloading. You must selectively copy the ones you want to store on your computer as per above. That said, I believe you can use filters to automate the copying of messages to local Pegasus Mail folders. I don't use IMAP so I don't know the filtering capabilities.

With IMAP, all messages stay on the server until you delete them.

I hope this helps.

I would definitely recommend reading Pegasus Mail's manual about IMAP since you will only understand the peculiarities of IMAP within its context after reading this - and how to achieve what you're looking for nevertheless. Go to Pegasus Mail's installation directory and open the file "manual.pdf" from its ...\programs\ subdirectory (the one containing winpm-32.exe).
