Transferring Pegasus Mail files to a new computer

My wife is getting a new computer. Is it possible to transfer/copy her emails, addresses etc from her old computer to her new one?

Yes. The process depends on the installation on the old PC. Specific guidance can be provided based on the content generated by the Info button located in Help > About Pegasus Mail. You can safely copy/paste that content into a reply. There is nothing personal or security related in it.

Your wife has a default installation so that makes it easy.

  • Copy the PMAIL directory and all subdirectories onto the new PC in the same path that it was on the old machine (the root of C:).
  • Create a desktop shortcut that is a duplicate of the one on the old machine but add the -O command line option (that is the letter O not a zero). This will start Pegasus Mail in offline mode.
  • Execute the shortcut. Pegasus Mail should startup. Don't do anything in it, just take a look to make sure it looks ok and then close it. This startup creates a registry entry that assists with the next step. Note: A different screen size and/or resolution on the new PC may produce odd looking window sizes/positions. Don't worry about that now. Fix it once you are done with this process.
  • Run the Pegasus Mail 4.80 installer. It will read that registry entry andautomatically offer to do an upgrade. Confirm that the upgrade path is C:\PMAIL and let it run. It will create the remaining registry keys as well as the start menu entries.
  • Remove the -O command line option from the shortcut.

You are done!

Be sure to keep the C:\PMAIL directory intact on the old machine until the new one is running problem free. Perhaps copy it to an external device.
