Backing up folders

I received a warning that a mail folder needed to be reinitialized. It was recommended that I back up the folder first, but I cannot find information on how to do this. It is a critical folder so I do not want to risk its loss.

Don't recall seeing a reinitialized message??
But what I have seen very seldom is that the Folders index file may have been damaged. Usually it Folder is open, and Pegasus of Windows closes improperly.

Step 1: Right click on the folder in question, and select Folder Information.
Step 2: Note the Filename information. This is the actual filename of the folder.
Step 3: Close Pegasus. Locate the file on your computer.
Usually the will be: C:\PMAIL\MAIL or a subdirectory of that. Could also be a drive other than C: on some setups.
Step 4: Copy both that File (FOLxxxx.PMM and FOLxxxx.PMI) (Mail folder and Mail Index File) to another location as a backup.
In my experience, it has been the Index file that has somehow been damaged.

Step 5: Reopen Pegasus, and again right click on the folder again.
Step 6: Select the Check consistency and see what it shows.
Step 7: If it finds a problem, Try the Reindex Folder option. Usually that recreates the PMI file, and solves problem.

I believe I once had the reindex process fail, but in that case, I was able to delete the damaged PMI file, since it is just an index file. All the messages are in the PMM file. Then the reindex process did work.
Note: redoing the index will keep all the messages, but can also restore some messages that had been deleted, but space not recovered, and also flags on messages being read or others will be lost.

That has fixed it always for me, but some have had folders with damage to PMM file, and that is a bigger issue to extract messages, but hopefully, it is just the reindex option.

Others might have more detail information. But if you make backups of the folders PMM/PMI file, they can always be restored to try again.

Good Luck.

The mailbox directories can be found by using PM's main menu Help > About Pegasus Mail > Info button down on the picture dialog. On the info screen you'll find a line starting with Home mailbox location: which provides the file directory containing the folder files as mentioned in the previous post.
