Cannot send mail via Earthlink

After a week of fiddling with their new downgrade... errr... upgrade, Earthlink seems to have gotten their mail server working. All is well. My faithful Pegasus is working properly. Apparently it was the server that was not in compliance. LOL!

Thanks for the help. I needed that information on Security Settings to get Peg working again! You folks are and always have been great to work with.

EarthLink E-mail - How to configure E-mail Settings for SMTP Authentication and Port 587

Article ID: 23490
Last modified date: Tue Apr 24 10:54 2007

This article outlines how to make changes to your email program to use EarthLink's new secure SMTP (outgoing mail) server.

Why you should use secure SMTP to send email

EarthLink's outgoing mail servers are now using authenticated SMTP (ASMTP) to help fight spam. As a result, you must update your email settings to continue sending mail from our servers. ASMTP requires you to enter your email password before sending email. This simple step blocks unauthorized outgoing messages and helps reduce the distribution of spam.

=============================================

My old settings were working fine prior to this change. They were:

For pop3

mail.earthlink.net

mail.earthlink.net
mizcg@earthlink.net
port 110

----------------------------

For smtp

mizcg@earthlink.net
mail.earthlink.net
port 25

===================================

There were no instructions for configuring Pegasus Mail for Windows. I tried chat support. First the fellow told me to enter
smtpauth.earthlink.net for the SMPT Server. Then he said Pegasus wouldn't use it. Then he told me to change Email programs and hung up. I am miffed to say the least.

I can't be the only person uing Pegasus Mail for Windows with Earthlink, but I could find no information to help me solve my problem. Your help will be appreciated as I have used PMail for years and do NOT want to give it up!

Hi,

Have you tried putting your username/password into the dialog box at:

Tool/Internet options/Sending(SMTP)/Edit/security/SMTP Authentication

You should then see a user and password sent in the log

Hi,

Have you tried putting your username/password into the dialog box at:

Tool/Internet options/Sending(SMTP)/Edit/security/SMTP Authentication

You should then see a user and password sent in the log

Have you checked "Do a prior POP3 login to authenticate before sending mail" on the [Security] tab of your SMTP settings? Also, if doing this doesn't work, try the various SSL/TLS settings on this same tab -- looks like yyou will need to check at least one of those. I did a quick google search and turned up this page which should help:

FWIW here's the google search I used if you are curious:

I'm sorry I couldn't respond sooner. The Earthlink mail server has not functioned properly since the evening of the 20th and the results of any testing are questionable at this point. However, I appear to have made a little progress. I also did a Google search. Most of what I read was gibberish to me as I am not knowledgeable about telecommunications. But I picked up enough to change my SMTP settings to:

Local Server Name: smtpauth.earthlink.net
Server TCP/IP port 587
On the Security Page I checked Log in the SPTP server using the following details and entered my user name and password

With these settings I sent myself a test message and it was sent and delivered. HOWEVER, when I tried to send myself a file attachment, the transmission failed. The message with attachment disappeared from queued mail, but did not get sent. It ended up "stuck" on my hard drive in the Mail folder and locked Pegasus. I had to delete the large stuck file in order to reopen Pegasus. Before I deleted it, I was able to view it and it said:

"From: Mail Delivery System <>
To: Self
Subject: Mail Delivery Failure.
Date: Wed, 24 Oct 2007 14:03:43

Delivery has failed on the enclosed message for the following
reasons reported either by the mail delivery system on the mail
relay host or by the local TCP/IP transport module:

 501 <test 2 attachent>: "@" or "." expected after "test"

550 Your message does not conform to RFC2822 standard

Your original mail message follows:"

This was followed by a copy of my test message and the attachment. I find it hard to believe that Pegasus does not meet standards and suspect that the problem is still with the Earthlink mail server. What should I do at this point? Just wait and try again in a day or two or is there really a problem that I need to address on my end?
