Okay....gee where do i begin? I'm using a different email address for this post and want the primary to work

I recently changed over to (like yesterday when it was ready) Verizon DSL from a small "local' indepentent phone company. I was with them for about 5 yrs and had no problems whatsoever with having them for DSL and using Pegasus mail. I've used Pegasus Mail for over a dozen years and simply love it and want to configure to verizon.  I'm kind of a different guy as I also use Firefox as my browser.

I didn't think I was going to have any problems going from DSL to DSL but I guess I am as Verizon apparently doesn't provide help to anything other than MS Outlook and/or Outlook express....and I hate MS Outlook. I'm getting no Tech help as just about everyone somehow has never heard of Pegasus and must be living in a cave. I've tried to use the Network configuration wizard to set up the ability to use my favorite mail program but can't get it to work and get the following msg:

Delivery has failed on the enclosed message for the following
reasons reported either by the mail delivery system on the mail
relay host or by the local TCP/IP transport module:

   550 5.7.1 Authentication Required

Their mail server settings as told on a newcomers printout sheet are

Incoming mail server (POP3) is incoming.verizon.net

Outgoing mail server (SMTP) is outgoing.verizon.net

can anyone help me get back to normal using my Pegasus mail....I HATE OUTLOOK

Does any following info help anybody to help me (email address removed)

[*] Connection established to 206.46.232.12
 0107 220 vms048pub.verizon.net -- Server ESMTP (Sun Java System Messaging Server 6.2-6.01 (built Apr  3 2006))
 0021 EHLO [192.168.1.47]
 0027 250-vms048pub.verizon.net

 0019 250 SIZE 20971520
 0043 MAIL FROM: SIZE=501
 0035 550 5.7.1 Authentication Required

Other than the MSOutlook excuse is there something special that needs to be done with verizon? Anyone else have problems?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me

You need to turn on authentication.  David Harris has implemented ESMTP AUTH CRAM-MD5 for WinPMail, Mercury and Mercury/32.  They do a SMTP authentication in accordance with RFCs 2554 and 2195.  Mercury and Mercury/32 also do the LOGIN and the strange MS AUTH=LOGIN.

Go to File | Network configuration | (Sending) SMTP, edit the SMTP setup, select the "Security" tab and select one of the 3 options for doing SMTP Authorization.
