POP3 Network or Protocol Error

Thank you very much for your help!!

I solved the problem and I can send and receive Pegasus Mail again.

It appeared that the Firewall of Norton Internet Security blocked Pegasus Mail.

Best wishes and thanks again,

Pedro Snoeijer

Thank you very much for your help!!

I solved the problem and I can send and receive Pegasus Mail again.

It appeared that the Firewall of Norton Internet Security blocked Pegasus Mail.

Best wishes and thanks again,

Pedro Snoeijer

Because Norton AntiVirus deleted Pmail, I had to install it again.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Since then I have a problem with receiving and sending E-mail.

When trying to receive E-mail I get the following message:

POP3 Network or Protocol Eerror

Trace showing end of transaction sounds:

2. Bad address “pop.solcon.nl”.

When trying to send E-mail I get the message:

SMTP Network or Protocol Error sending mail

Trace showing end of transaction sounds:

2. Bad address “mail.solcon.nl”.

In Internet Mail Options all information is given as it should.

Before the problem with Norton it worked and I could send and receive E-mail using Pegasus Mail.

I asked the support service of my provider Solcon for help, but they cannot help me, for they do not know Pegasus mail.

Can anybody help me in solving this problem?

Thanks in advance!

Pedro

These errors indicate that Windows is failing to resolve the addresses shown - technically, it means that the Windows "gethostbyname" function is returning an error.

Go into the Windows (note, Windows, not Pegasus Mail) Networking control panel, and bring up the properties for the TCP/IP protocol. Try entering an explicit name server address instead of simply accepting the name server offered by DHCP.

What you have is a straight configuration error of some kind at the network level - you need to get your machine resolving domain names properly. I can't think of any setting in Pegasus Mail that could result in this type of problem, or that could even have any appreciable bearing on it... DNS resolution in Pegasus Mail doesn't even use the system timeout values (it uses whatever timeouts are predefined by the system).

Cheers!

Thank you for your response and advice!

Unfortunately I was not able to fix the problem.

I tried several times and I don't know what exactly to do with the TCP/IP protocol.

I also don't understand, wahy it worked before Norton deleted Pegasus Mail, and only since that moment I have this problem.

The same problem appears when I try to recieve or send E-mails from my other E-mail adress.

I tried Outlook (with another E-mailadress) and that works, but I do not want to use Outlook, but Pegasus Mail!

I really don't know what to do now.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Pedro

Looks like the firewall is blocking your outbound TCP/IP communications from WinPMail. This also may be caused by Norton if you are using it to proxy the POP3 and SMTP communications.

Go to File | Network configuration | General and turn on "Create Internet session logs (advanced diagnostic use only)"

Checking this control tells Pegasus Mail to create special log files that show the entire exchange of information between it and the servers it connects to. Each session will be created in a file called TCPxxxx.WPM in your home mailbox directory (the "xxxx" is replaced by four digits). Creating session logs will slow down the performance of your system somewhat, and you should be aware that any username and password information exchanged between Pegasus Mail and the server will be shown in the log, *even* if you use SSL to secure the connection. Session logs are primarily useful if you need to debug a problem between Pegasus Mail and one of the servers it connects to - you should enable the option only on instructions from a system administrator or from Pegasus Mail technical support. [ Technical note: this control has the same effect as using a "-Z 32" commandline switch when you run Pegasus Mail ]

You can now try again to send/receive the mail and then look at the resulting TCP/IP debug file. Review of this file will tell you exactly what is going on between WinPMail and the server. You might want to post copies of these files here (with the password blanked) if you need help in the analysis.

How should I do that?

You can use notepad for this purpose. Double click the file - select program from a list - highlight notepad - okay

Open it with Notepad, this is a pure ASCII file.

WinPMail can't even make a connection to your POP3 host. I tried telneting into port 110 of pop.solcon.nl and it works.

Try the following replacing the <hostname>, <username> and <password> with the information for you system.

Start | Run telnet.exe pop.solcon.nl 110

You will see something like

+OK Hello there..

then enter

user <username>

and you get

+OK Password required.

then enter

pass <password>

you will see

+OK Welcome! X messages (xxxxx bytes)

If this does not work then your basic winsock system is broken and needs fixing. If this does work then there is something blocking WinPMail and I suspect it's your firewall.

I did what you advised me (Run telnet.exe pop.solcon.nl 110

Everything worked untill the password.

First there appeared several times the message: ERR login failed

After a view trials the password was accepted (however I didn't change anything) and the next message appeared: +OK Logged in

and nothing else happens.

What does this mean?

I did what you advised me (Run telnet.exe pop.solcon.nl 110

Everything worked untill the password.

First there appeared several times the message: ERR login failed

After a view trials the password was accepted (however I didn't change anything) and the next message appeared: +OK Logged in

and nothing else happens.

What does this mean?

This means that you can use telnet to connect to the server and cannot use WinPMail. This also means that there is something on your system blocking WinPMail; normally this is a firewall of some sort. I can't help you from here, you are going to have to look at what you have running on your system that does this.
