IMAP with SSL problem

[quote user="Richard"]

Interestingly, I use the same copy of Pegasus to connect to an MS Exchange server, 2003 I think. Connecting to that using IMAP only seems to work if I use 'Via direct SSL connect'.

Yeah, tragic isn't it. Outlook only supports direct connect too, as far as I know. Trust Microsoft to be six years behind the times on standards compliance.

Cheers!

Could anyone help me get IMAP with SSL working?

I'm trying to connect Pegasus to Mercury, both machines on the same LAN, no firewalls or anything involved.

Pegasus 4.41
Windows 2000 pro

Mercury v4.01b
Windows NT server

I can connect with IMAP without SSL.

Mercury IMAP is set up to use port 993.
Pegasus is set to use a server port of 993 and 'Via direct SSL connect'.
I've created a certificate.

When I try to connect, Pegasus reports:

Profile 'Richard':
'The IMAP server that manages this mailbox or folder has reported an error
during the operation you have attempted to perform.
The operation cannot be completed.'

On the server,my session log says:

19:59:30.086: Connection from 10.2.0.50, Wed May 30 19:59:30 2007<lf>
19:59:30.096: << * OK mydomain.net IMAP4rev1 Mercury/32 v4.01c server ready.<cr><lf>
19:59:30.096: >>
19:59:30.096: << * BAD Malformed command or oversize literal.<cr><lf>
19:59:30.096: 9: Socket write error 10054 (connection aborted by remote host)
19:59:30.096: 7: Socket read error 10054 (connection aborted by remote host)
19:59:30.146: --- Connection closed normally at Wed May 30 19:59:30 2007. ---

Could anyone advise me what I should try?
I'm sure I had this setup working some time back.

Regards,
Richard

Direct-connect SSL is heavily deprecated by the IETF these days - no self-respecting mail package should be doing this willingly. Mercury does not support direct-connect SSL for IMAP for this reason. Configure Pegasus Mail to use the normal ports and STARTTLS instead.

Cheers!
