Looks like you do not have the proper authentication for this sender

David Harris has implemented ESMTP AUTH CRAM-MD5 for WinPMail.  It does a SMTP authentication in accordance with RFCs 2554 and 2195.  It will also do the LOGIN and the strange MS AUTH=LOGIN.

Go to Tools | Internet  options | (Sending) SMTP, edit the SMTP configuration, select the "Security" tab and then select the SMTP Authorization option as specified by your ISP.  Most require the the second or third SMTP Authorization option

There are some ISPs that advertise CRAM-MD5 but do not support it.  In this case you should try using v4.5 or later.  It has an option to fall back to the less secure options.

Do not use CRAM-MD5 authentication even if it is advertised

The process of logging into the SMTP server to authenticate your identity can take a variety of forms: the server "advertises" the forms it understands, and Pegasus Mail looks through that list, choosing the most secure form it recognizes. Some forms are very "weak", in that they either transmit your credentials as clear text or in a form that can be easily broken, while other forms are "strong", in the sense that it is very difficult to work out your credentials simply by observing the exchange of data between the two programs. Unfortunately, one of the strongest forms of authentication, called CRAM-MD5, is commonly misconfigured on SMTP servers, even at quite reputable ISPs - the server will advertise that it supports it, but will actually fail any attempt to use it. Getting the ISP to realize that they are at fault is a lost cause in most cases - it's almost always easier simply to check this control, which tells Pegasus Mail never to use CRAM-MD5 for this server. You should be aware that you reduce the security of your connection by checking this control: CRAM-MD5 is the only commonly-used authentication form that offers reasonable security, and by disabling it, you force Pegasus Mail to use less secure methods... But sometimes you may decide that being able to send mail is more important than being able to do it securely. The choice is yours.

"Socket read timeout" simply means that Pegasus Mail has waited for x seconds (the value you defined) for a response from the server and hasn't received one.

Since it looks like your ISP is using sendmail, it could be that they're attempting to resolve the sender address: in some cases, that can cause very long delays - sometimes up to five or so minutes. Try increasing your timeout to 300 seconds and see if the problem persists. If it doesn't (i.e, the message eventually goes through), then you might like to have a word with your ISP and see if they can tweak their sendmail configuration. If 300 seconds doesn't work, then you may have a connection or routing problem of some kind, especially if you're working on a flaky dialup connection.

Cheers!

I suspect a packet fragmentation problem here.  A POP3/SMTP transmissions may fail if the MTU packet size is so large that a packet is fragmented.  In many cases the receiving system router blocks the receiving servers "packets fragmented" response to the sending system using "MTU Discovery".  These oversize packets are not accepted and so are resent.  This results in a timeout, generally at the end of the message transmission but it can be anywhere in the process.  You need to reduce the MTU size. Windows defaults to a 1500 MTU and many routers and DSL connections need 1492.  You might simply want to turn off the MTU Discovery operation.

You might want to get a copy of SG TCP Optimizer that I find quite handy.  http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php  This little utility will allow you to test your MTU for maximum size without fragmentation against specific servers.  If will also make it easy to adjust the MTU.

And finally, does this computer, by chance, happen to have an NVidia NForce 4 chipset on the motherboard?  If so, many other have had this exact problem, and it turned out to be an optimization setting for the built in NIC which caused the problems with packet fragmentation. Disabling the advanced optimization capability called "checksum offload" made all the problems of sending SMTP mail via WinPMail disappear.

That would appear to be a problem at your ISP's outgoing server.  Have they changed configuration recrently, or started to require authentication? (Sometimes this is done by a POP before SMTP method - collect before send.)

This sounds to me like the mail server is refusing to send because you are connecting from a machine it doesn't think is connected via its own network.

This is an anti-spam precaution.  Allowing anyone to connect to a mail server and use it for sending on their outgoing messages is known as 'open mail relaying' and is widely frowned upon because it offers an open season to spammers.  Therefore, ISPs only allow users connected via their own network to send outgoing messages through their mail servers.

Who is your ISP, and how are you connecting to the Internet at the times when these errors occur?

Yes, it looks like it can't authenticate her.

Has your ISP got a webpage where you can check exactly what it's expecting for a username, Sara? For example, sometimes the domain is included in the username, sometimes not. Also, do they want SMTP authentication? It's here:

Tools > Internet Options > Sending (SMTP)

Highlight the name there and click "Edit".  On the "Security" tab you've got some options there. They may require you to log in, or to do POP before SMTP. Again, they should have a page with the email client set-up details.
